Just purchased a G23, and i'm curious as to where to start in the quest to finding both range/target ammo as well as SD/HD ammo. Which brand, grains, FMJ, JHP, hydrashock and so on. And what's junky brands that i should stay away from. Please give a n00bie some .40 cal ammo 101 here ;)

any help/ advice is greatly appreciated!

I like the 180gr loads in 40cal,they offer great penetration and still give very good expansion. The 180gr Rem GS jhp offers close to 45acp performance. You should also consider ordering a 9mm conversion barrel and a 9mm mag for your G23.

Just about any major manufacturer FMJ round will do for target practice. I'm a little partial to DoubleTap's 200 gr XTP load for carry.

I like the 180 grain Federal HST.

180gr Rem Bonded GS jhp
180gr Speer GD jhp
180gr Winchester Ranger SXT jhp
Any 3 of these are excellent 40cal rounds with close to 45acp performance.

thanks everyone. I've picked up some CCI blazer with aluminum casings 180gr. I figured since they shot that at the factory to test it, then its a decent place to start with for now.

The beauty of the G23 is that it will eat anything its fed. Any cheap ammo for the range, but test your choices of carry ammo before filling the feed trough for street carry.

All good choices listed above, but also consider carrying 155 gr. Speer Gold Dot GDHP. My personal favorite, but to each their own.

Do some reading up on the 165 Grain Speer Gold Dot. Thats what I carry in my G22.

165 grain winchester range ammo from walmart is what I use for range practice and 155grain Federal hydro-shox for my defensive load. I love the 165 grain winchester for the range it is consistent and a real good price (around $19 per 100)

I prefer 180 gr for the .40 with Magtech as practice rounds and HST as defensive rounds.

165 gr. Gold Dots from DT for carry, and their 165 gr. FMJ's for practice.

just don't use any ammo that has lead.Glocks hate lead and so do the barrels.you can get several drop in barrels that take lead rounds lwd for one.ck out lonewolf.

Which grain Gold Dot GDHPs would kick the least?

Have you tried using the search function? I bet there are a dozen posts on this subject in the past couple months.

Ranger T or Federal HST are tops. Gold Dot is a distant third...avoid the 165gr gold dot as it doesnt expand as much/reliably as either the 180 or 155gr gold dot after clothing.

Yep, sure did. My search came up empty and thus the reason for my post. I found posts regarding other calibers, but none that pertained to the .40 cal.

Try to use practice ammo that most closely resembles your carry ammo in ballistics (weight, speed). I use 165-gr blazer brass (can't use aluminum at the closest gun range here) and either 165-gr or 155-gr hollowpoints that are driven at somewhat higher velocities.
