I was shooting our local club USPSA match today, I normal shoot my XD-40 and/or my Revolver. We allow re-shoots so for my second run I figured it might be fun to shoot the match with my CW9. Well about half way into the third stage the trigger goes dead. You pull the trigger and no click the trigger spring is good and the trigger return forward but no engagement to the sear.

After getting home this evening I had to carefully disassembled the the striker assembly so I could get the slide off the frame since there is no way to release the striker with the trigger. Once apart a closer inspection makes it appears that the tab on the trigger bar that engages the sear is gone.

The CW9 is pretty new (3 months) and only has about 900rds through it. Has anyone else had trigger bar problems with CW9s? I did not take the gun apart any further, is removing the side panel on the frame possible or only a factory job?

This makes me a bit apprehensive about this weapon as a carry weapon. Certainly I don't expect parts to never fail but a carry piece should be able to go more than 1000rds, a lot more that 1000rds, without part failure.

Kahr will be getting a call in the morning about this issue. Hopefully they can set this straight.

Thoughts? Comment?

Thanks

That sucks dude.

My CW9 is about the same age and round count as yours with no problems. Sounds like the part had a defect like a hairline crack when it was installed.

From what I hear Kahr will set it straight and make it worth your while with some freebies when you get it back.

Keep us posted.

I left a message with Kahr yesterday morning and no call back yet. This is getting frustrating. I have called all three service numbers on their website and all three dump me to a voice mail system, one of which has an outgoing message about a week out of date. I sent an email this afternoon hopefully that gets a quicker response.

Has anyone else had this much trouble getting in contact with Kahr to arrange service?

I e-mailed Kahr regarding having some night sights installed. Every e-mail I've sent has been answered in 3 business days. Never tried to call though.

Hmmm... I guess I will have to wait. This is not impressing me as good service. When I had a warranty issue with my XD I got a RA number the first day I called and had my XD back in my hands eight days after I sent it. S&W did some repair work for me in 7 days door to door. These may be exceptional cases but a 3 day wait just to respond to an email to get an RA number seems less than impressive customer service.

hmmm...

Your CW9 was bone stock and you did no mod's or fluff's and bluff's to the interior parts?

No mods, it is my primary CCW so I wanted it left stock. The gun gets cleaned and lightly lubricated after each range session and it has never be disassemble more that a standard field strip for cleaning.

Still no word from Kahr...

Got an email back from Kahr early this morning. They needed more contact information from me before they could give me an RA number. I sent the additional information and no response yet, probably 3 more days till I get my RA number. Glacial customer service, this is painfully.

Kahr received my CW9. Now we'll see how long it takes to get it fixed.

I bought a CW9 about 2 months ago. Ive run about 400 rounds through it with out a hitch. I sure hope your problem is an isolated problem. I have read that Kahr customer support is some of the worst in the industry. Please keep us updated.

So far Kahr's customer service has been acceptable but very slow. I called last Monday, email Tuesday, got an email back Thursday needing more info, finally got my RA# Friday afternoon.

Compared to to Springfield armory that had me a RA# the first time I called and turned around repairs on my XD in eight days door to door.

I'll let you guy know how it goes, if I don't hear from Kahr in the next week I will see if I can get an update.

Hey, not to change the path of the thread, but what problem did you have with your XD and which model? I bought an XD45 compact about 3 months ago. Maybe 500 through it and perfect so far.

I have two XD-40s a Tactical that I use as my primary USPSA Limited-10 gun and Service model that was my CCW until I got my Kahr now its my backup competition gun. Both of them are older models (2004) and had the original locking blocks in them. This was basically the locking block out of the XD-9 and due to a minor engineering problem the extra recoil from the 40S&W was causing the blocks to crack at a stress concentration where the barrel lug engage the block. The failure never cause catastrophic failures but could eventually cause problem if left unaddressed.

New version of the block (http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b153/DixieWrecked/NewLockingBlock.jpg)

The solution was a simple stress relief cut (basically a hole drilled in those corners where the crack started) in the block. All the new XD-40 have this newer version of the block and the problem has pretty much disappeared. That was back about 6500rds ago. My tactical is approaching 10,000rds and the only other problem was a broke trigger bar spring at about 6000rds but that was a quick fix.

Well, I hope the .45 doesnt develop that problem. I dont think I put my guns through the rigors yours get, but I admit your CW9 has me paying attention.

I really appreciate the pics of the XD. Thanks for the effort. Im pretty sure I wouldnt have even noticed those cracks but I'll be looking more closely now.

Im going to subscribe this thread to find out the outcome of your Kahr. Please update this same thread so I dont miss it. Thanks.

I'm sorry to hear about the problems you're having with your CW9. I've been considering either a CW9 or a CW40 as a carry piece and would like to hear how they handle this. Keep us posted.

I got my Kahr CW9 back last night. They had made two attempts to deliver it during the day and of course I was at work. I drove down to the FedEx center and got it and got it after I got home from work. They fixed the trigger bar and polished the barrel for me. I had notice some minor burs in the barrel near the muzzle. The work seems to have been done well and on time. I still think three weeks is way to long to turn a warranty repair around but they did say it would be three weeks and turn in around it just over that, 3 weeks, 2 days. They also threw in a new 7rd magazine, given that the MSRP on that magazine is $40.00 and about the cheapest I was able to find one was just under $30 I take that as compensation for my shipping costs to send the CW9 to them. Now I just have to find time to get to the range and test it out. I ran snap caps through it last night and everything seems good but live fire is the only way to be sure.

Three weeks turn-around on a factory warranty repair with a free mag included is pretty good service, IMO. Hope they got it working right!

I think the CW9 uses some metal injection molded parts. I don't know if the trigger bar is one of them though.

Hopefully the final update.

Took the repaired CW9 to practice at the club tonight and put a box (50) of Remington UMC 115gr FMJ and a box (20) of my carry ammo, Speer Gold Dot 124gr JHP +P short barrel ammo, through it. Feed every thing without a hiccup. So unless something else happens I think I will live with this CW9 for awhile longer.

I'm going through some papers tonight and I happened across an email reply from Dottie that I received about a year and a half ago and printed out:

"Hi, I've read on the website that the CW9 has a metal injection molded slide stop. I'm curious as to what other pistols use metal injection molded parts, what the parts are and when this started.

Thanks." - Me

To which I received the reply:

"The CW9 slide stop is indeed a MIM part as are the striker block, striker spacer, cocking cam, slide back, and trigger for all the Kahr pistols. On the 1911, the thumb safety is a MIM part." - Dottie

The part that broke on my CW9 was not a MIM part. The trigger bar, not the trigger, is the part that broke. It appeared to be a piece of formed sheet metal. MIM does not bother me, most of the parts of my XDs are MIM and I have over 10,000 rds through my XD-40 Tactical with only one MIM part giving me a problem and it was more an engineering problem than a MIM problem.
