Mississippian here, headed to the Big Easy for the first time since Katrina. My wife and I are doing the Quarter thing, staying on Poydras. Any advice anyone has on places to avoid (other than the usual) is greatly appreciated. We have heard crime is way up now. Truth or hype?
You sound like an Army rotorhead
Take it from a Native and a retired army puke
Avoid the darker side streets in the French Quarter. They are not as well patrolled as Bourbon and Royal.

Stay in the main pedestrian areas and you should be ok.

Thanks for the info. That's sorta what I expected but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Right on. Kiowa Warriors
Might go down for J***fest this weekend.
Any idea on the CCW policy?
How close do the security folks at J***fest check the patrons for CCW?

No metal detectors. No pat-downs unless you looked suspicious.
It's not really worth it unless you're parking a ways off. It'll be hot, you'll be moving a lot of the time. It's a royal hassle, and crime within the event is unheard of.
Outside the gates, it may be worth it, but that's your call.

Good call on J***fest.
I went to NOLA on Friday. Parked in the "back" of Fair Grounds. Walked thought the combat zone. CCW.
Next day, parked on Gayosa St. and Urusline, didn't CCW and felt fine.
No metal detectors. I'm LEO so I had creds w/ me but no one asked. Not sure of what they would have done.
Gate folks were more concerned about liquor being brought in.
Inside was fine. On Friday, I was glad to have it outside but almost wished there was a gun locker where I could park it.
