Kahr P45 - Split Frame Rail

Dear Kahr,

I have owned a P40 for close to three years with no issues and sold it to purchase a P45. I like the .45 round better and I felt that the P45 was a better shooter than the P40 and more important my wife liked the P45 over the P40 so it became hers...

On 9/10/06 I purchased a KP45 S/N:SA**** for $712.34 from Shooters Firearms & Accessories (904) 737-4495. I can provide scanned copies of the receipt on 05/07/07 by email if needed.

I bought it as a carry weapon for my wife and she has put approximately 600 rounds through it. Today after a brief range visit she is cleaning the weapon (her weapon - she cleans it) and tells me the frame is cracked. I go over and look and on the right side of the frame the middle of the rail is split approximately 1 inch or so. I also noticed that there was unusual wear on the frame where it would meet the slide. I asked her about this and she stated she never noticed it.

I have enclosed photos of the frame split.

What is the next step? Please have someone call me at 850-***-**** as soon as possible. This was her carry weapon and I am reluctant for her to carry a Kahr after this. I have given her my SW 642 until I can resolve this issue. She still wants the weapon... I am on the fence.

This is upsetting to say the least. I am thinking about buying the tp45.Are you sure it wasnt there when you bought it? Only 600 rounds!? keep us posted.

I don't know exactly what you'd call it .... but that is much bigger than a split! Anything you can get your finger under and wiggle around is pretty bad. Good luck. If Dottie's back at work, she'll take good care of you.

The only rounds that have been through it is WWB 100 count boxes and Federal Hydra-Shoks nothing exotic and no reloads.

Whoa... that is NOT a little problem.

Thank God there wasn't a failure of some kind whilst shooting. Having the slide imbed itself in the forehead would not make for a fun afternoon.

Also looks to be a terminal illness... I certainly hope that Kahr replaces your firearm.

That is a catastrophic failure. Kahr should not only replace the gun but give you a gift certificate for at least $100 worth of accessories.

A failure of that magnitude could easily have killed someone.

Wow, and Kahr continues to have problems with their polymer framed pistols. I'm sure glad I bought a MK40 the other day.....instead of the PM9 that I originally thought about. I bought my first Kahr about 7yrs ago, a K40, and I don't think I've ever had a function failure of any kind with either one....even through the break-in.

I love my K40 and MK40, but I'm having a difficult time convincing myself that I'd get one of the poly Kahrs.

As best as I can tell, the slide does not have full contact for the length of the rails. If you look at the twin steel imbeds at the rear of the frame, they stand proud of all but a couple of portions of the plastic rail. Plus, there are the twin steel rails inside the dustcover that serve to hold the muzzle down in contact with the frame.

While it is no doubt disconcerting, I doubt it put you at any risk. I bet you could clip off that piece with a pair of di-cuts and continue shooting.

Sorry to see that, I agree that the gun would still operate in that condition as the frame rides only on the metal surfaces, the plastic rail is more of a reassembly guide.

I would like to see how the framework runs thru the grip.

I've got about 3000 rds thru my P45, running good
