hey guys, I'm headed to Ellsworth AFB on 23 May for field Training. (i'm from Auburn University AFROTC)
Just wondering what exactly is required to receive expert marksman.
OK.. I know I will get 45 rounds and I think there is a 10 circle on the torso of the target and a 6 circle on the head of the target.

I am wondering how many yards away the target will be, how many holes in need in each circle, and if any double taps or 2 in the chest 1 in the head stuff is required..

Can anybody help me out?

For the M16, you shoot at 25m simulated 300m.

M9 quals now are 36 rds, shot from 5-20 yds, variety of positions (draw, fire, over barricade, etc.)For expert you need to have 30 of 36 rds in the 8" circle over the chest area, with all 36 somewhere on the target. I last shot expert back in 2002....retired in 2004.

At Lackland in 69, it was a score of 59 or 60 hits in the torso from 4 different shooting positions(15 rounds each) at 100 with M16 only.

Prone, kneeling, sitting and standing.

I hit 60. That part of my records never showed and I never got the ribbon.

From what I remember last time I M9 qual'd it was either 6 or 9 in the head and 26 in the COM circles, with all rounds somewhere on the paper.

I can ask a CATMdude here, but USMCGlock03 is also CATM,and on GT here.

You need a minimum of 25 in the chest, 6 in the head and a minimum of 41 anywhere on the paper. For example if you shot expert it would look like this.....41/25/6. (As a minimum) By the way in case your wondering AD CATM

When did they add the head? When I yearly qual'd during 98-01(I'm Enlisted and non-SF/LE) it was all center-mass. If I remember correctlly you had to have them all in the black, and a certain number in a circle to qual as expert.

Oh BTW, first post and hello to all.

They added it a couple of years ago I think it was in 03 due to penetration issues. The motto for the cops is now 2 in the chest 1 in the head.. Good times

DG,
Same thing happened to me. Expert M16, Expert SW Mod 15.
Never got this in my records. Just sent off for my DD214 and
records- only takes 25 weeks.

8th SPS USAF,

I have my original DD-214 and for the first time was reviewing block 24 which lists all medals, commendations, decorations, badges, citations etc, etc.

I can't figure out what the letters following VSM refer to.

The Vietnam service medal is listed as (VSM W/1BSS AFM 900-3//).

Additionally, my Air Force Commendation medal isn't listed either. I have the actual blue binder that was presented to me with the AF stamped seal but it isn't listed on my 214.

It's kind of neat looking at this paperwork stamped Jul 31 1972.

Where did you request your records?

The w/1BSS indicates you are entitled to wear one Bronze Service Star on the VSM, representing your participation in a Vietnam Campaign.

Thanks Russ,

I may send in SF-180 and get a copy of my service record just to see what info is in there.

VSM - Vietnam Service Medal. I might
add, if you received that particular
medal, you should have also received
the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

In reference to the 1st post in this
thread. Expert Marksman - is not correct,
it would be Expert Shooter.

Three catagories of shooter awards: Qualifier,
Marksman, Expert. Of course if one shot
in competition, they could hold the Master
Shooter title when qualified to do so,
in rifle and/or pistol.
