Who's the best place to pick up a 9mm conversion kit from:
Oly?
RRA?
Model 1 Sales?
CCMG?
J&T?
I prefer cheap high-cap mags and a last round bolt hold-open. What's the pros and cons associated with the places listed?
I also have plans to make an SBR, are the 11.5" ones the most reliable? That's the most common length I see.
What's the preferred gas system, Car or Mid? If I SBR I guess I'm stuck with car huh.
Finally, what's with the giant shell deflector I see on many 9mm Uppers?
1)Oly uses a completely different system than the others that you mentioned.
2) Out of the mfgs that you listed I would choose either RRA, CMMG or J&T. These all use the Colt system.
3) Mags, there are some cheap plastic mags made by Pro-mag, some folks have good results with them but I didnt. I use Colt mags for now, but I am waiting for the new CProducts mags. The CP mags will be SS with a new follower and will cost half the price as the current Colt mags.
4)Barrel length can be whatever you desire. For example, my 9mm SBR uses a 5" Tros 3-lug barrel.
5)9mm is not a gas system, it is a blowback system. There is no gas tube on a 9mm AR.
6) The oversized shell deflector is a throw back from the original Colt 9mm design. The 9mm case is shorter as well as the bolt stroke compared to a 5.56mm. So 9mm spent cases wouldnt hit the standard shell deflector. This can be a big deal to a lefty as hot brass would most certainly hit them right between the eyes.
Hope this helps.
I could write a long and wordy answer. But, try this link it is to the pistol and rimfire section in the AR15 tech forum. There is an FAQ that will answer most of your questions.

Thanks, I did a quick read through that before posting, the biggest thing that had me confused was the mag block.
I kept seeing Colt mag$, Sten mags, Uzi mag, modified Uzi mags, Pro-mag, CProducts mag.
I was having a hard time following the posts keeping things straight. I read the Uzi mags have dried up so I didn't want to buy a system that made me depend on Uzi mags.
I think I've got things sorted out to the point that I will go with a Colt system and Colt-like mag block then I should be able to use the CProducts 32 rounds mags and have a bolt-hold-open. If I get lucky I could also use modified Uzi mags but then I think I lose the bolt-hold-open, is that right?
Now it's just a matter of waiting for the ATF Form 1 to become a functional link again on the ATF site and I can start filling in the boxes and go get some engraving done.
Gixxer, the best mag blocks are made by Hahn precision, they are more expensive than all the others but, like most things, you get what you pay for.
If your building a dedicated 9mm AR, get the Hahn "dedicated" mag block.
If you want to quickly change calibers from 9mm to 5.56, get the Hahn "bottom loader". The bottom loader still allows last round bolt hold open. This is the mag block that I use on my 9mm SBR, and it works very well.

There is a link at the ATF website to order free forms to be mailed to you. Mine took about a week at most. You can get Form 1's, transport weapon across state lines, C&R license apps, etc...

Uzi mags have dried uP??? I guess the 10 i just bought arent real, J/K if you browse the gunbroker.com you can find them and modife them yourself. Also garrison sells them already modified http://www.garrisonmfginc.com/index.php for $25 a pop which is still cheaper then Colts, I have promags too and so far they work pretty decent. RRA has their own mags and they are $35 a piece.
Guys,
There is a guy on gun-broker selling the argentine military 40 rd. colt style mags (they are great!) for $35 each. I picked up a few :)

Garrison Manufacturing (http://www.garrisonmfginc.com/9mmp.php) has very nice 9mm kits and parts. They use a dedicated top load magwell block.
