View Full Version : i've got feeding problems.
took my new stag to the range today. first 2 mags operated just fine, then the 3rd, 4th, and 5th kept trying to double feed on me.
i've only got the one stock mag. after 40 rounds i could get 2 shots and then it would go CLICK, the bolt would be half way closed with a round sitting nose down half assed into the chamber and the following round nose up coming out of the mag. this required me to drop the mag, work the charging handle, lose both rounds and start over.
i unloaded the mag and relaoded it thinking maybe i had screwed up the fraction of an inch spacing between the rear of the round and the rear of the mag. no dice.
i popped the top, pulled the bolt and saw nothing amiss.
i let an expert load the mag (he had 3 ar's in his lane so in my book that makes him and expert compared to my newb ass) and still no dice, same deal as before.
i let it happen again and tried just working the charging handle to clear the jam. that just complicated things.
the good news is that the double taps i was able to pull off were pretty darned accurate.
i want to love this rifle so i need to know, is this a rifle, or a mag problem?
p.s. i THINK it's just a plain old usgi mag with the green follower, but i know squat about mags.

Further info as per the "troubleshooting posts" thread is always handy.

A weak mag spring will let the friction of the top round pull the round under it along with it. You might have a defective mag.
that's what i'm hoping for, i'd hate to have a brand new defective rifle. i'll be picking up a couple of pmags sometime in the near future, i hope they fix this problem.

Check and see that you don't have a M4 ramped Upper and a Standard ramped barrel. Using those two in combination leaves an ever so small point for the bullet tip to hang up on.
Did the "expert" at the range try different mags or did you fiddle with your mag the entire time? This could easily be a magazine problem. So . . .
Tear the mag apart and check that the spring is secured to the bottom of the follower.
When the mag is fully loaded and you hold onto the charging handle while dropping the bolt to get a slow release what happens? Are the bullets sitting in the mag wrong, too low?
Buy more magazines. This should be hard to not justify since only having one magazine is ghey :pjmn:
ETA:
Your upper receiver where the barrel meets should NOT have these cuts. If yours does then you need to make sure the barrel is also M4 ramped and not Standard ramped.

ok it looks like the ramps are the problem, the reciever has the ramp cuts, the barrel dosen't look like it does.

BEER's I can smell that sneaker from here. :faint:
What ammo are you using?
It's not soft point ammo is it?
The double feed issue due to a weak spring shouldn't happen if you load the mag full and only fire 5 rounds ,then reload till full. That should keep enough tension on the mag spring.
If you want a good deal on mags this will have you set

Total cost is like $115.00 for the 10 mags.
Might be a better way to buy mags incase you have a 2008 gun ban.

Yup.
Those large cuts you see in the pic ARE on part of the barrel.
