View Full Version : Is this really a lightweight rifle??
I am looking at the shipping info for my Del-Ton and it says "8 pounds"...now is that light for an AR?
Just curious. Thanks!

My superlight weighs 6.2lbs w/o the mag (just weighed it). It weighs 7.1lbs with a loaded (30rnd) magazine.

I've since cut down the carry handle to just leave fixed iron sights.
So, no, I wouldn't call 8lbs "superlight"... I think 8lbs is about normal...
I'm wondering what made mine so heavy then...???
It does have a "lightweight Chrome lined barrel" maybe that did it?
EDIT: It could be like 7 lbs. 1oz. and they just call it 8 pounds and I'm sure the packaging is at least a pound so yeah...I don't care, just trying to gauge where mine fits in.
Thanks!

I just weighed my 20" rifle and my son's 16" carbine.
My 20" Gov't profile weighs 6.5# with no magazine.
My son's 16" weighs 6# with no magazine.
This is on a digital bathroom scale that only has .5# increments, so the rifle may be as much as 6.9# and the carbine may be as much as 6.4#.
I use this scale to weigh my luggage at least once a week, and it always exactly matches the baggage scale at the airport.
For comparison, it shows my M1 Garand, with web sling, at 9.5#. So it seems fairly accurate to me.

cj, your scale may be a little off; or perhaps mine is (Shimano spring scale; nowhere does it say 'no springs, honest weight' ).
The old pencil barrel A1s weigh about 6.5lbs, and the gummint profile about 7.5.
And, tah-dah, the winner for porkiness, the HBar at about 8.5lbs.
If the OP finds that his rifle indeed weighs over eight pounds empty, he might want to consider having it turned to gummint profile.
