View Full Version : 5.56mm safe to fire in Colt?

I see that ammo-oracle.com has a section that suggests that it may be unsafe to fire 5.56mm ammo in some .223 Remington chambers.
I've noticed that Colt rifles have "CAL 223" stamped into the receiver, but the barrel (near the muzzle) is stamped "C MP 5.56 NATO 1/9"
So which is it? Can both types be fired through the Colt?

The chamber is 5.56 you'll be fine.
I'm wondering why your twist is 1:9. Is it a sporter?

What the receiver says has no bearing on the barrel/chamber. (As a general rule) If the barrel says 5.56, go by that, NOT what the receiver says.
That said, you're Colt is for sure 5.56, not .223. Shoot either in it!

What is the story, exactly, with Colt? Have they compromised with the antis somehow? I remember hearing something to this effect during the Clinton years, but never heard what the deal was.
I see that Colt manufactured at least some rifles that comply with the AWB (lack of flash suppressor, adjustable stock, or bayonet lug).
Has Colt gone back to manufacturing rifles with all the "evil" features since the AWB sunset?

The answer remains 'maybe' and 'it just depends'. There are times Colt seems unwilling to sell to anyone but the gummint, but they allow their guns on the open market via their distributors.
They have even gone back to a full circle, shrouded firing pin bolt carrier (tho' they still have the non-spec hammer and trigger pins and the forged in block in the lower), along with the other evil features.
I don't know exactly what their issue is, but there has always been an excess of self-righteousness at Hartford...'Colt,the arm of law and order'. Do you recall that they wouldn't make any more Thompsons when they found out that gangsters (and the IRA) used them?
