THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
A Columbus police officer accused of striking a fellow officer on duty was allowed to remain free on his own recognizance.
Officer Stanley Byas, who is charged with felonious assault, did not have to appear in Franklin County Municipal Court this morning. A grand jury will likely hear evidence in the case by June 1.

Byas, 46, was fingerprinted and his gun and badge taken this week after an investigation into the fight with fellow Officer Joseph Townsend on May 2. The two men scuffled outside the police substation on Woodrow Avenue, according to police.

The complaint alleges Byas repeatedly struck Townsend, 37, in the face with his fist.

Byas' attorney, John Waddy Jr., declined comment today. Byas has been on the force 22 years. He is now on restricted duty pending an internal investigation.
