best ammo?

Just bought my first tactical shotgun (Mossberg 500). Normally a handgun guy. The Glock will remain in my truck.

1. What is the lightest (recoil) ammo to use for self defense & practice (I'd like to practice with what I keep in the gun). Anybody keep anything lighter than buckshot/slugs?

2. What does everybody like to practice with if different than what you use for self defense?

When I had a shotgun, I loaded Hornady TAP 00 Buck (Low Recoil) because it was the tightest-patterning load, while being low recoil, out there. I fired a few boxes for practice, but at $5 for 5 rounds, I dont' think I fired more than 20 rounds. For high volume practice regular birdshot, No. 6 or 7 1/2 being common for just blasting.


I dont' load anything less than 00 Buck simply because I have seen quite a few people shotgunned and discounting suicides at point blank range, I don't trust anything less than 00. Lighter rounds "Might" do the job. 00 generally does it with no more than 2 rounds.
