Ok got an AWESOME new Armalite AR-10 carbine. Nicely balanced, shoots great, no malfunctions, points and shoulders nicely.
Why would I need to spend another $400 for a free float, ladder type 18oz system?
Only things I see as later add-ons would be a flashlight and a dot type optic of some kind.
I love this gun, but I don't want a kitchen sink type AR.
Trying to keep as simple as possible and light as possible.
I personally don't get it.
I know people with $200 barrels, cheap triggers, and like you mentioned, $400 front hand guards.
Not for me.
I'd rather spend that money on a good barrel and a nice trigger, but everyone's different.
Sorry I couldn't sell ya on it.

I just buy YHM or MI railed handguards.
I don't see the point for the expensive handguards. I can understand the point of the monolithic rail but not the expensive handguards.
Don't be scared by the free float install and think the factory needs to install it for you. It's pretty easy to put on a FF rail. If you don't have the tools I'll bet you could post in the State clubs that you need help installing a FF handguard and whoever helps gets a 6 pack of beer.
Freefloating will often increase accuracy, but if youre happy with it now, I wouldnt 'fix' it.

That's what I'm talking about. I may never shoot this gun over 50 yards, and my local range is only set-up for 100yds. So how much accuracy can I gain by FF? I think I would rather spend the money on ammo and actually practice and maybe a can.

Keep in mind that the AR platform is primalily a battle rifle, especialy in 7.62 NATO. I like the rigidity of the pinned gas block. I would'nt want to risk a catastrophic failure by installing a set screw mounted gas block and a free float handgaurd. especially if you're only expecting to shoot at practical distances. I attached a weaver rail on the lower forearm of my 5.56 with simple hand tools and if I want to add accessories this will accomodate most,ie;vertical foregrip, light, etc;. I used to build my rifles to accomodate all sorts of unnecessary stuff but after spending a year and a half in Iraq I realized that I was just being silly. K.I.S.S. principle applies to nearly everything. Dave

Well put. Marketers sure have found a niche selling these "tactical" products though.
Thank you for protecting our country.
It's a great product, but I'd buy ammo.

I got a great deal on a surefire rail and because of that will add them, a foregrip, and a light. To me that is simple.
