Ive been searching the threads and I kinda like the idea of only putting night sights on the front leaving the back plain. What if any advantages are there for doing this besides its cheaper?

What if any advantages are there for doing this besides its cheaper? While night targeting with just the front sight is possible, the advantage of that tiny bit of speed gained, could easily be lost to sloppy alignment. Still, some shooters would say just the opposite. A fiber optic (FO) front sight, with plain rear sight, works great for daylight shooting. I have this set up on my G17 and love it! A tritium fiber optic (TFO) sight should offer the same advantage, plus a useful night sight picture! It was the latter, that I tried to put together, a year ago. The cost savings you mentioned were not part of the deal, since I was obliged to buy a set of TFOs and discard the rear sights. Given the crappy 90-day warranty, and reported problems with the TFO product at that time, I aborted the project and purchased the Dawson Precision set (see attached) instead. AmeriGlo is super about selling compatible sight components, but they don't offer a TFO. Another approach is to use a black rear sight with no day markers, but with tritium dots. This is paired with a tritium front sight, having a bright white marker, as well as the lamp. The front sight fairly "pops" in daylight targeting. The Sig Sauer Equinox series has the above-mentioned set up, but with a green TFO front sight (they evidently have more buying power than I do). It offers a day sight picture like my DP FOs, and a night sight picture like my Trijicons. I predict this will catch on. --Ray joshp12 05-22-2007, 01:55 the last set up you mentioned sounds like a winner. I like it. I think I will try and put that together. thanks RayB 05-22-2007, 11:24 Originally posted by joshp12 ...I think I will try and put that together. thanks Good luck! :wavey: You'll need the specs of both sight brands for your gun model, to properly pair them up. Just to make it easier, some are metric, while others are SAE... --Ray JRW 06-07-2007, 06:53 "Another approach is to use a black rear sight with no day markers, but with tritium dots. Right you are! I've examined these closely in green/yellow, and really like them! --Ray Scouse 06-08-2007, 01:31 It is so much more of a speed tracking system, three bright dots, and so difficult to change the mind set of a long time shooter, from square in square, gap of light on each side the same, the top two planes level, that it is quite possibly a new shooter option, and leave the old bulls eye mentality alone. Ouch! That got your attention yes? Try this, draw a back sight aperture on a piece of paper, in black marker, take a black square, and fit it into that space, take care to have the gap of light on each side of this square the same, and the tops of both aligned, not up, or down. Now draw two green dots, drop a same sized green dot onto the paper, slide this third dot into the middle? Much easier yes? And quicker. hurricanezUM 06-08-2007, 14:31 I have a brand new never installed front only Trijicon front night sight, for the glocks. This has the ''07'' date code stamped on the front sight showing that is was made in 2007. 04/07 to be exact. If you are intrested, please let me know. poison7fl 06-09-2007, 08:30 Well... It's better than nothing.. I have done this on mine, only because I hate the plastic front factory ones that tend to pop off easily, so I replaced the front with a metal night sight. But it is personal preference. I have since bought all my boys new Meprolight night sight sets. blueridge 07-08-2007, 09:20 I have the Ameriglo GL112 front sight installed with blacked out stock rears (use a heavy magic marker - works great for a nice flat black). I really like the front sight over the stock. For daylight shooting or low light this works just fine. In total darkness, you really need some kind reference to where the rear sight is, otherwise you are really guessing. I plan on adding the GL147R (rear yellows from the operator package) in the future. GL147R isn't on their website, but they do sell them if you call or email. vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
