I've been trying to collect a few sayings and quotes related to self defense, training, military, etc.

Here are a few of my fav's:

if it aint broke, dont mess with it. but if it is then turn it in and get a new one.

if you can hear the rounds going by then reload and keep shooting, the fight aint over yet.

I'd have to reread the books to find out if it's in there as well. It's in the movies though. Eowyn was practicing with her sword before the battle at Helm's Deep. Aragorn walked in, and they had a conversation in which this quote pops up.
