I am trying to figure out how guys are making so much money in Iraq? I haven't looked up all the various pays and things like that but how are E-5's coming home with 70k? I thought combat pay was just liek a couple of extra hundred a month. (Im wondering what kind of pay I'll get if I have to go to the box later this year) My friend tried explaining but the things he was saying didnt make much sense to me at all. IS he stretching the truth?

All I can think of is - there's no place to spend your money and no alcohol sold, the pay is tax free, they get combat pay, BAH, Fam,ily Separation pay and then they reenlist and get a big bonus. I haven't been there, but that's a guess based on my "in case I go" research.

yeah maybe thats it... not much to do with the money and I guess if you have kids and stuff the seperation pay and what not can add up. I supose one could buy up a lotta stuff online... but it seems like most people I know wait till they get home to start buying stuff.

70k is a lot to come home with...

I only saved about $12k (no reenlistment). Too bad the wedding and honeymoon and ring ate it all up.

I would say 70k for a tour as an E5 is stretching the truth to put it nicely.

I hear ya! He didn't say he MADE that... just that between bonuses, pay etc he saved he came home with that much. Who knows what he had when he started etc... He just told me that his bank account had that much in it and that he wasn't spending any money. He got a hefty ass bonus I know

I saved $20K which is about an much as an E5 with 3 years in can make in a year long deployment.

I have $10K left after school, wedding, new car and my Glock of course.

I was making near if not exactly $4,000 a month as an E5 in Kuwait. Add my $15,000 bonus to that. Still no $70,000. Perhaps he was including all of his premob time.
