I think I read that after certain amounts of postings different avatars were available?

Go into your User CP.

Click on Edit Options.

At the bottom of the page you will see information regarding avatars. If you click on the "more info" link you will see that you can choose an avatar from the system or, if you have 10 posts of more you can specify your own custom avatar.

Note: the maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 14000 bytes (whichever is smaller).
