I was planning on going with Linux, but I got some new discs from dell so I went ahead and reinstalled windows. I'm connected through a router. The net is working fine on other comps in the house.

After I set it up in windows, it shows me connected, but I'm not sending or receiving packets. I tried enabling and disabling and also restarting the machine, nothing.

Net was working fine before I did the reinstall of windows, any help here?

When asking questions please tell us which version of Windows, which NIC, etc... please!

Check the Network Interface Card settings to be sure it is correctly installed and the drivers are current.

Check the NIC's configuration settings and make sure the is set for auto configuring it's speed and mode.

Run Windows troubleshooting help.

Have you configured your router? I suspect, its showing you connected to a network, which isn't getting to the Internet because your Router is not configured. A simple test, run your DSL/Cable Modem, directly to the PC, and bypass the router. My guess is, you'll get online.

If that works, then its a simple matter of re-configuring your router to work with your connection. At that point, we'll need the make/model of your router.

Edit: Just re-read your post and I missed that the other PC's were working. That should mean the Router is accessing the Internet, assuming they are hooked through the router.

See if following these instructions to reset your IP works(on the PC not working)..

Sounds like the network drivers aren't installed. XP should give a message though. Windows 2000 includes a lot of network drivers but XP does not, except for maybe the not so common "Microsoft" brand network cards.

I am currently installing updates. I broke down and went out and bought a wireless card.

The NIC is built into the MOBO, it's not in a separate PCI slot. Do I do the Dell drivers from dell.com? The support CD they gave me only had generic drivers for programs and other software/shareware, no Network drivers that I could see.

I tired connected directly to my verizon modem and bypassing my VPN and wireless router and I still got nothing. Shows I'm not sending or recieving any packets.

You should be able to download drivers from Dell's website.

That's all it was. Installed the driver and I'm back looking up low quality internet adult entertainment!

MAkes you wonder though, if you only have one computer, and the NIC isn't working, and you have to go to the dell website to download the drivers to fix the NIC card, how are you supposed to accomplish that?

The driver should have been on the Dell CD with the other software and drivers. I remember Windows 2000 did include almost all NIC drivers on the Windows CD so the NIC drivers weren't on the Dell CD. I guess when they switched to Windows XP they forgot that XP does not include NIC drivers like Windows 2000 did.
