Wrote this for the Fourth.
COLORS OF THE FLAG
Sometimes, in a certain light, all you can see is the red
So mothers say, whose front porch felt the hurtful tread
Just before a name scarlet writ in Notices Of The Dead
Living Free between blue oceans, under soft white clouds
Is bought with a price; hard reckoning hid under shrouds.
It shouldn't all be explosions and beer for the July crowds
There's some that fly the flag, wish for the day all the best
But silent hold an old picture with ribbons proud on the chest.
Blue and white are good - oh, but red costs more than the rest
