And since I'm "saying" something abnormal, I'll also mention that I personally stick with seven rounders. But of the two you ask about, I'd have to say Wilson. mesteve2 07-08-2007, 03:38 McCormick MDO8 07-08-2007, 03:47 I've never had a problem with either and I use them both exclusively. RojasTKD 07-08-2007, 18:43 I've used both. They both work well but only the Wilson has worked well with ALL my my 1911's past and present. I hear Cobra mags from Tripp Research, Inc. are really good. Many say ther are the best. Just checked and they are no longer as expensive as they once where. CanyonMan 07-08-2007, 22:09 Both are good, I personally like the Wilson better, and use them. btw, don't use 8 rounds... Use 7 rounder's in your 1911. It will up reliability, plus you can leave them fully loaded for very long periods of time without worry, unlike 8 round mags. ;) And before I get guff from someone on this, most every "compident smith," will give you the same advice. I have never had as good a function with 8 rds, as i have with Wilson 7 rd. In fact, very long ago, i learned this lesson, the hard expensive way. CanyonMan sheepdog 07-09-2007, 17:40 In 8-round magazines, only the CMC has worked in every gun for me. The Wilson would not lock back every time in every gun, but that didn't show up for a while. 7-rounders are a whole different thread...but I would bet the Wilson 7's would beat the heck out of Wilson 8s. Well, this is true. (7rd'ers being different that is). It is not just a "Wilson," but any Milspec 7 rd. is better than the 8rd, anything. The 1911 was not even designed for 8rd. mags. This is where so many people have some failures, and blame the gun. I am sure someone can chime in and say, "Hey I've used 8rd. for years, no problem." Great.. But one day you will have. The first I tell people when they have problems with feeding, ejection, is to switch to a 7rd. spring. I had some 8rd. mags laying around here, and pulled the springs and replaced them with the 7rd springs, and NO more problems. Of course My particular 1911, has had a good deal of cool stuff done to it in the "reliability area," and shoots flawless in any condition I could find myself in. That is 'the position of the gun itself in hand,' from upside down, to major limp wrist, you name it, it just keeps on tickin. Thanks to my friend "Ken Crawley." http://www.crawleycustom.com/index.php (there is none better). Seriously. You can take a very reliable 1911, and put 8rd. mags in it, and start having some trouble. For those who use them, and no problems, again, great, but just hold on. ;) CanyonMan anyplainjoe 07-09-2007, 20:20 where is the best place to purchase the Wilsons? CanyonMan 07-10-2007, 01:58 Originally posted by anyplainjoe where is the best place to purchase the Wilsons? I don'tknow about the "best" place..... But Midway sells them, as do a million other places. http://www.midwayusa.com CM fyrfytrcwd 07-10-2007, 05:52 I use the Wilson 47D's (8-rounders) exclusively now in ALL of my 1911's (albeit I only have Government and Commander models...) Never an issue, never a premature lock-back of the slide. I bought mine on Ebay in lots of 20 and have never looked back. They're always cheaper there (at least cheaper than the local shops) and arrive pretty quickly. There's a 10-pack for $219.95 plus $8.95 shipping on there right now -- that's $22.89 each... Seems like a good deal for new mags to me, especially shipped right to your door. Just my two pennies... slewfoot 07-10-2007, 06:01 I have a number of Wilson and McCormick and have never had a problem with either. The 7 round Kim pros are excellent also. tagaykoyan 07-11-2007, 08:17 1911s are picky. try which model works for you. my friend gave me his chipmccormick powermag 10rounder due to feeding problems with his colt. it worked flawlessly in my RIA:thumbsup: steve1911 07-12-2007, 01:16 Originally posted by slewfoot I have a number of Wilson and McCormick and have never had a problem with either. Seems to make a good package, but I don't think you'd be in bad shape with standard Powermags (with a steel 1911) or Wilson mags. blackbag 08-07-2007, 15:42 +1 for the power mags with tripp springs and followers. A very good 7 round magazine. You get the durability of the power mag tube with excellent follower and spring of the tripp mag. Zulu Alpha 08-07-2007, 20:59 I use the Wilson Combat 47D mags myself... nothing wrong with the McCormik's just the Wilson's have not forced me to find something better:thumbsup: SilverState 08-07-2007, 23:24 Wilson 47D mags are better than CMC powermags or shooting star mags. However, Metalform round follower mags are better than Wilson and CMC. And on a budget, MecGar work fine. michael t 08-17-2007, 00:55 Wolff ,Chip and Colt work best for me eljay45 08-17-2007, 05:49 Wilson 47Ds have been flawlees for me for almost 75,000 rounds. I use them for carry and competition. I've never had a reliability issue. So I'm not too sure how a 7 rounder could make anything better. www.natchezss.com usually has a good price. Gary1911A1 08-17-2007, 06:32 There is a reason the FBI use magazines with 7 rounds instead of 8. It's called reliability.:) Patrick Graham 08-17-2007, 08:07 The only problem I've ever found with the McCormick mags is the old style follower.. In the 30 years I've been diddling around with home brew 1911s I've seen a few instances where the slide stop can get caught underneath the follower. This is actually a gun problem and not a mag problem because the slide stops had been dicked with.. but still.. the mag was stuck in the gun.. The same slide stops would just ride on the plastic side of the Wilson follower and the mag could be removed from the gun.. If your gun is 100% then there should be no issues with the McCormick mags.. I'm using McCormick 10 round Power Mags in USPSA L10.. they work great.. SDDL-UP 08-17-2007, 09:34 I've used the Wilson 47D and the Chip McCormick 8 rnd. Power Mags and never had an issue with either. I switched back and forth between the two trying to decide which one I liked better. Never could get them to malfunction. I do prefer the Wilson follower and the Power Mag base pad... go figure. I guess if I had to recommend one it would be the Wilson. If my Kimbers are 100% reliable with 8 rnd. magazines there is no logical reason to switch to 7 rounders. Rinspeed 08-18-2007, 10:15 I like the Wilson follower slightly better also. The springs in the Wilson 47Ds could be a little more robust in my opinion. I haven't tried the Tripp follower/spring upgrade kits but I've heard they are very nice. retsvek 08-19-2007, 14:54 I have been a PROFESSIONAL and I mean professional lurker here for a few years as well as other forums along this line. I shoot approxiamtely 2500 rounds per year. (I have a spreadsheet to record number of rounds per weapon so I can keep track of maintenance and failures and such) I have owned several 1911's, glocks, H&K's, AR's the lot. I have tried several mags with the exception of Chip McCormick's. That being said I have never heard anything negative about them. I have NEVER EVER had in any way shape or form any sort of FTF, FTE or stovepipe for that matter any issue what so ever from a Wilson 47D eight (8) round magazine EVER!! Now I have had plenty of failures with metalform's and stock Springer mags which I think are metalforms, which may work better with seven (7) rounders instead of eight (8) but never with a Wislon 47D eight (8) round magazine for any 1911 style pistol in 45 ACP. P.S. I also DO NOT use cheap ammo. Which in my few and far between occurances of issues with other mags it has almost ALWAYS been crappy cheap ammo that caused the issue EXCEPT with Wilson 47D's which has handled the cheap stuff as well. Just my long winded $0.02 worth... vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
