Is it possible to use the 30rd magazine as a monopod when shooting prone?
Will the magazine run reliably while it has pressure from the bottom?
Any reasons not to do this?

I fired thousands of rounds that way.

I've done it. I would just be sure not to try and tilt the mag in a way that would cause a misfeed... You shouldn't have any problems though.

Cool.
Thanks guys
Did that with a Mini-14 during quals one day. Stopped the gun every time until I took pressure off the mag. Never had any AR do that though.

I don't do it, but it's personal preference. Never seen a problem with GI mags doing that. I have seen an Orlite mag get jammed too far into the mag well that way, though.
Moral of the story: don't use Orlite mags.
Been doing it since late 1987 without any negative effects.

I've seen people have malfunctions in the Army doing that in the prone and foxhole positions, but it was mostly because they pivoted with the weapon using the magazine against the ground. If you go too far forward or back you're putting a pretty good bit of pressure against the magazine, and they're not THAT strong.;)

Speaking of using the mag for support, does anyone else put the mag outside their weak-hand elbow when shooting from the standing position? My SDI taught me that trick.
I've done it and didn't have problems. I'd rather not though.
