View Full Version : Commander-sized 9mm for carry

Been thinking about the next purchase (which will probably be my last gun for a LONG time).
I've already got a full-sized steel .45 1911, and I want a smaller lighter weight 1911 for carry.
I want this one to be 9mm.
Basically features-wise, I think what I want is the S&W 1911PD. It's got an alloy frame, upgraded (over GI) sights/safety/beavertail/hammer. I prefer external extractor, but it's not a critical issue. Problem there is that it doesn't come in 9mm.
Kimber makes the Pro Carry, but they only come in the bushingless design. I've never owned a bull barrel pistol. Do you need a tool for takedown? I also prefer not having the ambi safety, but I can swap that out without too much trouble.
A Colt LW Commander is also a possibility, but I don't know where those price out.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
The kimber 4" guns require a "tool" for takedown. You can use a very small allen wrench or bend and cut a paperclip, which is what I used when I had my kimber. It's not any harder to take it down than any other 1911 in my opinion.
The colt LW commander 9mm is getting hard to come by, and those that are up for sale carry a nice price tag for a used gun. Most I've seen, in decent condition, go for around $900 or so and on up. Other than the kimber pro, aegis pro, or tactical pro, the only other new gun option for you in commander size is the STI. At least that's the only other maker I can think of right now. STI has a few commander size 9mm's to choose from. If you know a gunsmith, you could always just purchase a caspian or essex frame/slide and have one custom built to your specs.
You want a ramped barrel in any aluminum frame 1911.
Carry Pro is the best buy available LW 9mm.

Already have a .45, and I want the extra 2-3 rounds in the mag for a carry gun. Plus I shoot 9mm better.
I'd look at .38 Super too but the ammo is expensive.
I'm also looking for a 9MM 1911, the only reason being the better price of the 9MM ammo. I have a couple S&W 1911s, but figure, what the heck. The only thing I can come up with at the present time are the 9MM 1911s that Kimber makes. Not sure I want to go that route.

Sweet, I'll give you a dollar!
Two dollars?
I have the Kimber Tactical pro II and love it. No problems with it at all.

Is the mag well one piece with the MSH? How much does it add to the size?
The only complaint I had about my Stainless II was the nylon MSH it came with.

I used to cary a Smith and Wesson 1911PD in scandium. Unfortunately, it kept spitting empty casings straight back into my eyes and forehead. Acceptable for a range gun. Not acceptable for a carry gun. So I got myself a Nighthawk T3. I am very partial to Nighthawks and I love this gun!

Sorry. I guess the 2nd link didn't really work. However, at the bottom of the T3 page from Nighthawk's website, there is a link to the review. It is just above the price.

Here is the direct link. PS: This is in .45 and not in 9mm as in the original post, unless special ordered from Nighthawk as a 9mm

I picked up a Colt 9mm Commander on the same idea that 9mm is low cost and easy to shoot.
I was right.

What I did was buy a Colt Commander in 38 Super and bought a 9mm barrel for $25 on Auction arms.
