horsepower = work. So why can't it?

1hp = 33,000 ft·lbf per minute

Wrong. You can't have a HP rating on an electric motor. It doesn't generate horsepower.

However, you can convert to an electric unit of measurement: http://www.convert-me.com/en/convert/units/power/power.ehorsepower.en.html

All electric motors if 1/8 horsepower or more shall have a Horsepower rating.
Source: National Electrical Code (NEC2002) section 430.7 (A)(7)
Check out your garbage grinder (disposal) or garage door opener, it has a horsepower rating.

From the M-W Dictionary:Horsepower- a unit of power equal in the United States to 746 watts and nearly equivalent to the English gravitational unit of the same name that equals 550 foot-pounds of work per second

Electric motor can generate horsepower. Horsepower is simply a unit of measurement for power which is energy/time.

Don't worry about it.

BTW the horsepower unit was invented by none other than James Watt. ;)
