Bas block with original hand guards...

I saw an Armalite AR at a gun shop today, and it had a configuration I have never seen before.

It had a gas block instead of a front sight post, but had the original plastic hand guards on it instead of a free floating tube style hand guard.

Can I put a gas block on my AR before I save up for some type of rail set-up?

I wasn't sure if you could use a gas block because of the clip that secures the plastic fore-end.

Obviously it doesn't matter, right?
