View Full Version : For those that use iron sights..........
Which aperture do you use, the wide open 0-200, or that narrower 200-beyond?
Always the smaller aperature when I used them. The larger ones are best for CQB.

The smaller one with stock retracted, the larger one with stock extended, and at night (has night sights on it).

If they're zeroed and usually on an M16, the large for up close (100m or less) the other for everything else.
I was taught the "small for everything" but I know better.

Large, almost exclusively.
Well, I have only had mine a month or so ... but:
Large - jackrabbits, coyotes, and other things either moving fast, or close.
Small - paper plates, bowling pins, paint stirring sticks and other non-moving, long range for fun shots.
I have only shot my AR a few times, and I was just plinking around the ranch. I'll be off to rifle class before long though, so we'll see what's taught there.
Anyone else noticed an AR is like a 22 caliber laser? I think out of the box, I have been the most accurate with my 20" AR than I have with any other rifle (with iron sights-stock). I loaded up and shot a 1.5 inch group right off the bat with the first four rounds at 100m. That's not bad at all for me!
Predominantly large aperature. Exclusively, for 100 yards or less.
Thanks to all for satifying my curiousity. I was at the range the other day shooting, and I just got to wondering what other people use. Myself, Iuse the large aperture as well for under 100yds.
I used the small for everything, up close to far away (back when I could see) I didn't want to move the sight, once I got it zeroed. Now, I just use an electronic sight.

Small. Takes the 'X' out of 'X-ring.'

I use SMALL and smaller. Got a rear hood that will take apertures with different sized holes. Kept going smaller until I began to lose just a little light--then went to the next size larger--I think it's .046". That's not very big but I use that AR for paper punching only. Also have a narrower front blade to go with the smaller rear unit. It helps some as long as your eyes are able to handle it. I shoot matches at 100 and 200 meters.

Probably the best on-line source of info on AR15's sights:
