All,
I have an 870 express and wanted to make some modifications to it. I primarily will be using it for home defense along with a G38. Any suggestions for barrel replacements and should I look into a modified grip (hand gun grip)? All info is appreciated.
Thx

18" barrel if you don't already have one.
Keep the full stock.
Add a Surefire weaponlight (the replacement fore-end) which will cost as much as the gun, but WELL worth it.
You don't really need anything else. A sidesaddle ammo carrier maybe.

Adding a pistol grip, without a full stock, just means you have a shotgun you can't aim. Adding a full stock with AR style pistol grip just means you have a shotgun that looks scary to the grand jury if you ever really use it for home defense. Shotguns in the movies never miss and spread the shot a lot wider, a lot faster than real life, which is why pistol grips and hip shooting are best left in the movies. I use an 870 express for law enforcement classes and sometimes for 3-gun competition. It has been very reliable for 10-12 years now. I have a 20 inch rifle sight barrel (mainly for competition), magazine extension, and side saddle ammo carrier. It doesn't really need anything else.

Check local laws. Here in D.C. shotgun barrels must be at least 20 inches long.

I got this 870 PMAX from a fellow GT member last year for $660 shipped to my door. It is my patrol shotgun that I qualified with and has been flawless. I saw a pic of a GT members rebuilt 870P with only a magazine extension added and deep black bluing with the most beautiful wood furniture a month or so ago. It has inspired me to build one just like it for a conversation piece that will most likely never get fired.

Here is a pic of my 870PMAX since I added a side saddle for more shell capacity. A total of thirteen 00 buck shells on board. Disregard the other guns as this is the only pic I have of the 870 where you can see the side saddle.

I turned my spare 870 duck gun into my HD gun. 18in barrel with bead and cyl choke 89bucks, Speedfeed stock from AIM for 30bucks (blaze orange), XS Big Dot Tritium Bead for around 80bucks. 4shot side saddle (already on gun from duckhunting days) I think that was 20bucks.
The gun already had a OD Green/Tan/Matte Black Krylon paint job from the days of hunting. I sprayed down the orange stock with same paint. Attached bead with JB Weld, Slapped on the stock (which wasn't needed untill I tried to shorten the orignal stock and FUBAR) ALot of the stuff I bought you don't need and I didn't buy it all at once.
One more thing, Forgot about the light! G2 Surefire light, I epoxyed to the forarm. It aint movin. Alot cheaper than a Surefire forend.
It aint pretty but it works for me.
Should have seen the gun when it was 5 different colors.
