View Full Version : 7 round mag problems?
Anyone else have problems with their 7round mag for the Kahr Pm9? I have put 600 rounds now thru mine and it has shot every time. The other day when shooting I tried to manually rack the slide by pulling back and letting go and when doing so with the 7round mag it didn't feed. I know that the manual says to use the slide release but I've had no problems manually racking the slide with the 6round mag.
Just thought I'd see if anyone else has tried to manually rack the slide.

The instructions with the PM9 tells you to load the first round by inserting the magazine and then releasing the slide release to chamber a round..... if your PM9 is new or fairly new, I highly recommend you stick with this method for awhile. On down the road after your PM9 becomes broke in well, perhaps you might have luck racking the slide manually.... As some members on here have very good results doing so.
As to the 7 round magazine and having problems.... I had a few loading problems with my PM9 and the 7 round magazine when I first bought it and was going through the 200 round break in process. I sent email to Dottie at Kahr, who told me that she would immediately send me out a 6 round magazine to replace the 7 round one. She also told me that a "problem" with the 7 round magazine and the PM9's is that your pinky finger rides the bottom of the extended part of the 7 round magazine, and that this set ups the situation for problems that can occur. She was right in my situation, because I have not had any failures of any kind with PM9 since the magazine swap. I'm right at 850 rounds through my PM9 as of today.
Thanks KyGlock22, I will contact Dottie today.
I have several 6 & 7 round mags for my two pm9s and the nose of the bullets hang up on the feed ramp at times when pulling back the slide and releasing, on both pistols. A tap on the rear of the slide is all it takes to chamber the round. I think Dottie was right about her evaluation of some 7 round mags. I have one 7 round mag that's a sloppy fit front to back, so that if I put pressure with my pinky on the bottom, the top front of the mag tilts forward. What I found is that when the nose of the bullet in this mag hits the feed ramp, the lips of the forward tilted mag add more restriction against the case. I can get this to happen every time, but it doesn't affect feeding when shooting.
Also Dottie moved on to another position in the Company, so I've been told. The person who took her place is named Bob Holmes ;)
Yep, I emailed Dottie and got a reply from Bob. Seems to be good at the customer service so far.
Just load one from the mag into the chamber, then fill up your magazine. After getting a round in the chamber and filling the magazine, you can cycle all the rounds by hand to see how it will work at the range. All should chamber just fine during firing.
You know, I've been having this issue of not being able to rack the slide and chamber the first round on my P9. I've put in about 500 rounds in this gun and it's always shot like a dream, it's just that manually racking the slide to chamber the first round has only worked about 30% of the time. I just didn't know if this was expected or whether it's "by design." I haven't noticed which magazine gives problems, but I will take a look tomorrow to see.
This has always caused me some grief, as I thought it may be a defect with a part of the gun. As a result, I've been forced to "conceal carry" my Sig P226 (which is a hassle to try and conceal.)
Does anyone know if this applies to the P9 and not just the PM9? If this is the case, I'd feel much more comfortable about carrying the P9 on me as it is light, comfortable, and accurate as heck for a small gun. Thanks in advance.
Try this, lock back the slide, put 2 or 3 rounds in the magazine, insert the mag, then pull the slide back and let it go. It should chamber a round without difficulty.
However, if you do the same thing with a full magazine, expect a nose dive. It must have something to do with pressure of the magazine spring. It's hard to get use to if you have Glocks, Sigs, etc, but your experience seems to be typical.
