Dont know if this has been posted, but here it is:

There is a bill right now that would allow anyone with a legal CCW to carry on National Parks.
The bill is HR. 1897, the National Park Second Amendment
Restoration and Personal Protection Act of 2007.
We all need to contact our State Reps and let them know we would love to see their names on the bill as a sponsor and to see that they voted for it!!

To find your local Congressman: http://www.house.gov/writerep/
To find the email of your Congressman: http://www.house.gov/house/MemberWWW.shtml

Lets get behind this!

Jake

It was sent to committee in April and Ron Paul is the only sponsor.

It is a short and to the point bill that should take all of five minutes to vote on, but the congress critters have more important concerns than ending their abuse of our rights.

Done and done. Congress.org makes it easy. Make it short and to the point. Mine said:

"I want to show my support for this bill. Anyone with a valid concealed carry permit should be allowed to exercise that right [we are a shall issue state] in the National Parks.

I hope to see your vote in that direction on this bill."

I can't find H.R 1897 at Congress.org. Can someone post a direct link? I tried searching on the HR1097 number, as well as "national park" and "second amendment" with no hits. . . The same sponsor introduced H.R. 1097, which, having read the text, worries me. I want to know what I am supporting!

Thanks.

Done! I searched by bill # using the drop down list to designate the "HR" delineation.

That was a hard site to navigate. You would think that the search bar at the top would be useful, instead of requiring three screens of navigation. . .

E-mail sent to my rep.

Thanks!

Wrote my Congressman, Thaddeus McCotter, who was quite thoughtful in his response to my previous e-mail regarding HR 1022. I look forward to hearing his thoughts on 1897 as well.

I'm a Ron Paul fan. That said, congresspersons on both sides propose bills that they know will never pass just to play to their base. Kinda like :brickwall: , but gotta respect those that do it for us.

Yeah, so what we should do is not even voice our opinions on it, right? Just let it sit and die, no need to take a chance?
OR.....maybe we contact the people we elect and let them know what we want them to do for us...maybe it won't pass, but it can start a movement that might get it passed next time around....stranger things have happened. Or, maybe it will pass with some help from those that now know what you want.

Yep, you're right. Might as well just hole up in our basements, lamenting the fate of all things related to the RKBA...

living near a national park presently, this measure would make life easier instead of having to drive miles around the park or go unarmed (not just ccw but to/from range- I'd settle for being able to legally transport firearms w/o undue hassle)

done as well.
I also told mr. Graham that it should lead into other bills that would allow cc on campus and other gun free zones. That anyone who has gone through the course has proven themselves responsible by that mere fact.:okie:

Message sent to Representative Jon Porter (R-NV).

On a side note, if you search for HR 1897 at the top of the congress.org site, it will bring up a lot of messages sent by others to their representatives. I was surprised to see quite a few messages sent by other NV residents!

Reply from my Congressman: Rep. Peter J. Visclosky

Dear Stuart

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for H.R. 1897, the National Park Second Amendment Restoration and Personal Protection Act of 2007. I appreciate hearing from you.

Introduced by Rep. Paul, H.R. 1897 would prohibit any federal regulation from restricting any individual from possessing or carrying a firearm in an area of the National Park System. The measure was referred to the House Committee on Natural Resources, where it is currently pending consideration. H.R. 1897 has one cosponsor and a companion measure has not been introduced in the Senate.

Thank you again for contacting me. Be assured that I will continue to monitor the progress of H.R. 1897 with your views in mind. Do not hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Peter J. Visclosky

Will support. If the 2nd Amendment doesn't count way out in the woods, where does it count? I understand about yelling Fire in a crowded theater being a 1st Amendment reasonable restriction, and I suppose by similar logic one shouldn't brandish in a crowded theater. But, by what logic does one prohibit a backpacker from open carry in the middle of the woods miles from nowhere? I just don't get it. Out West here, our National Parks are pretty darn big.

A common claim from the anti's. Can you post where this law is written? I've never seen one. I work in commerical theaters. People yell fire and just about everything else all the time. I've never see one arrested or ticketed.

Can't you carry guns in some National Parks in Alaska under certain circumstances?

I think I remember seeing a Government website recommending large caliber weapons for protection.

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for gun rights. I welcome feedback from my constituents and appreciate your interest.

While I respect Americans' rights to defend themselves, to hunt, and to collect and enjoy firearms, I do not believe these rights are absolute. I believe that reasonable limits should be placed on the ability to purchase and use guns. I favor strict background checks for prospective gun owners and believe that assault rifles belong solely in the hands of our soldiers, not on our streets and in our homes.

There is a reasonable middle ground on this issue. I hope we can find a compromise that will enable us to be tough on crime and keep our children safe without denying decent Americans the right to self-defense and recreation.

I am always eager to hear your concerns and look forward to working with you in the future. For more information, please visit my office online at www.HankJohnson.House.gov. Thank you again for contacting me.

Sincerely,
Hank Johnson

I responded back with the statement, I asked for your support regarding the bill and you did not answer my question. Hank, please advise me of your support for this bill.

will keep you posted.

Havn't heard much about this bill in quite some time, but I did recieve a response last week:

Dear Mr. **********,

Thank you for taking the time to write about H.R. 1897, National Park Second Amendment Restoration and Personal Protection Act of 2007. I appreciate the benefit of your views on this important matter.

The original intent and purpose of the Second Amendment was to preserve and guarantee the right of individuals to keep and bear arms. I believe American’s have the right to own arms for sport and self-defense. I also believe that we must also ensure that safety is the highest priority when an individual possesses a gun.

As you know, H.R. 1897 would prohibit the federal government from restricting an individual’s right to posses or carry a firearm in a unit of the National Park System. The measure was referred to the House Committee on National Resources. Although I am not a member of this committee, please be assured I will keep your views in mind and follow this legislation closely.

Thank you again for taking the time to write. I certainly appreciate having the benefit of your advice as Congress considers important, and therefore, hope you will continue to stay in touch on other matters of concern.

Sincerely,

John Yarmuth
Member of Congress

Everyone knows that no "civilian" needs a gun in our National Parks!

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,319028,00.html

"PHOENIX — Biologist Karen Krebbs used to study bats in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument on the Arizona-Mexico border. Then, she got tired of dodging drug smugglers all night.

"I use night-vision goggles, and you could see them very clearly" — caravans of men with guns and huge backpacks full of drugs, trudging through the desert, Krebbs said. After her 10th or 11th time hiding in bushes and behind rocks, she abandoned her research.

"I'm just not willing to risk my neck anymore," she said.

Across the southwestern U.S. border and in northern Mexico, scientists such as Krebbs say their work is increasingly threatened by smugglers as tighter border security pushes trafficking into the most remote areas where botanists, zoologists and geologists do their research.

"In the last year, it's gotten much worse," said Jack Childs, who uses infrared cameras to study endangered jaguars in eastern Arizona. He loses one or two of the cameras every month to smugglers.

Scientists, especially those working on the Mexican side of the border, have long shared the wilderness with marijuana growers and immigrants trying to enter the United States illegally. But tension is rising because of crackdowns on smugglers by the Mexican military, increased vigilance in the Caribbean Sea, new border fences, air patrols, a buildup of U.S. Border Patrol agents and a turf war between cartels..."
