I want to purchase a bear bones 1911 and customize it myself. Any recommendations to which brand name/model to buy?
Most of the "customized" 1911s I see are Colt, Springfield, Caspian slide/frame.

+1 Only one I'd add is a Norinco.
Springfield or Colt.
I just got done with my Springer Mil-Spec. Sent it to the Custom shop for 10-8 Performance rear sight, 10-8 long trigger, skeleton hammer, beavertail, extended thumb safety, 4.5# trigger job, and repark the gun and small parts. It turned out awsome.

Get a Springer mil-spec, not a GI. The GI will need its ejection port relieved, whereas the mil-spec will not.

I was thinking a lightweight Colt Commander would be a good place to start. First a bobtail, and then send it off to a smith for a checkered front strap and some other goodies...

Get a Mil-Spec and add Wilson Combat parts. I think I have spent $1050 on the project. It shoots well.
