I have just come across a S&W 38 spl airweight model 12 6 round beauty. This is my first wheelie. What brand of ammo would you guys recommend for range and self-defense purposes.
Also what cleaning tips do I need to know?

WWB or GA-Arms canned heat reloads for the range. GA-Arms Shear Power Plus Gold Dots for defense.
I'm not sure I'd push it much with +P as they are the older alloy K frames.
Hornady makes a good performing standard pressure 125gr load, the standard pressure Nyclad 125gr HP if you can find them, and if you have the money, Buffalo Bore makes some very good standard pressure loads that match or exceed typical +P loads.
1. Easy on the +P.
2. Cleaning...
cylinder where it meets forcing cone.
under ejector rod.
recoil shield area.
barrel and charge holes.
Leave sideplate alone until you know more.
Good video is Jerry Miculek and revolvers...any of them by him.
Guys with Hoppes #9 are hot.

I'd use Golddot 135gr. +P for my carry load, but as others have said, don't shoot more than a few to get a feel for the recoil.

Thanks for the info. I called S&W and gave them the serial number and it was manufactured in 1983 so I know it has the steel cylinder. I plan on giving it a good cleaning this weekend and buying some ammo. Is there a good diagram anywhere on cleaning?

Most any standard 158 round nose for plinking. The 158 LSWCHP +P for carry. Buffalo Bore just came out with a line of non +P 38 Special ammo that looks good for carry as well.
