View Full Version : Do sportbike windshields make a difference?

I am wondering how much difference it makes to have a mini windshield & upper fairings on a sport bike. For example, compare the Suzuki SV650 & the SV650S. The overall specs are basically identical. So, what are the pros & cons to the SV650S other than aesthetics? Does the mini windshield & upper fairing make a big difference in rider comfort, wind drag reduction, or in deflecting hazards (stones, bugs, etc)?

I rode year-round with a sport fairing that size and it was a life saver. Though not that effective in deflecting road hazards (most general riding will be done high above it) it kept the wind blast and pressure off my chest. Really cut down on wind buffeting and aided steering control at higher speeds. Jan-Feb. I would add a pair of "Hippo Hands" covers and pray for an early Spring thaw!

The 650S has a very different riding position. You carry much more weight on your wrists compared to the non-faired version. I doubt the lower fairing does a lot, but even a small upper fairing makes a huge difference in buffeting if well designed. Rocks don't follow the slipstream though.

Not having seen them in person, I missed that subtlety. Upon 2nd look at the website, I can see that the S version does have a different riding position. While I like the idea of having some form of wind protection, I don't like the forward lean into the wrists.

Hmmm... I suggest riding both and then deciding! Even though the S looks like you'll have a lot of weight on your rest, once you are up to speed the opposite is true, for me anyways.

As the wind hits your chest, it picks you up ever so slightly taking the weight off of your wrists.

Looks to me like "mini windshield" is kind of an understatement.

Wind shields? Are we talking about cars or are we talking about motorcycles? I'm taking the stupid wind shield off my KTM 990 Adventure as we speak.
