View Full Version : Air Show? R. Emmelman 08-21-2007, 11:50 Anyone going? I will be working there on Saturday. Scutter01 08-21-2007, 13:10 Originally posted by R. Emmelman Anyone going? I will be working there on Saturday. I was there last year, and except for the weather preventing the Thunderbirds' show, it was terrific. I never thought I'd see the day when I would actually get to see a P-38 Lightning fly, much less in an honor flight with P-51's, A-10's and so on. Still trying to work out if I can make this year's show. The other aerobatic acts were great, but the Blue Angels make them all looke like amatuers. I will be working at the gun show so I will have to miss it this time around. BTW part of their act is the fly by at near supersonic at low level. The noise is awesome and you can see the air compressing around the aircraft as it zings by. They also have a C-130 (IIRC that is what it is) take off nearly vertical with the help of JATO rockets. Quite impressive. I thought last year was the Thunderbirds (as mentioned in my previous post)? Or maybe it was two years ago. Either way, I agree. Blue Angels FTW! Side story: Wife and I got married in a church a few miles south of an AFB on the day of an air show in which the Blue Angels were performing. The church was in line with the flightline and so the jets were performing over the church during the wedding ceremony. The sound of the massive GE F404 turbofan engines in between vows was...memorable. I still tell people I got the Blue Angels to perform for my wedding. Didnt get to see them. I was too busy getting married. mpholic 08-21-2007, 16:52 I'm planning on it. Do they have Harriers? While in the Marines my family and I attended a number of Air Shows while stationed at MCAS Cherry Point. They were free for military and dependents. While the Blue Angels are fun to watch I was equally impressed with the Harrier acrobatics. R. Emmelman 08-21-2007, 17:37 They had Harriers a couple years back. Stop by and see me. I will at one of the radio control points, keeping the CAP guys out of trouble :) I will either be wearing an OD ball cap or my shiney shaved head. epsylum 08-21-2007, 18:34 Originally posted by Scutter01 ?? Man time flies. ;) boilergonzo 08-22-2007, 08:27 I live in Greenfield, and do usually go. The thing that amazes me (and makes me happy to see) is the Thunderbirds/Blue Angels, even on the days I am not actually at the show. Their paths take them over my area several times (they are almost ten miles from the airport and well out of the crowds view). They STILL look like they are having fun, doing gentle rolls and mini-stunts. I realize they are part of a finely tuned act where seconds count and timing is critical, but it is fun to watch the ones shaving off a few minutes until they have to get back just tossing their jet around (presumably so folks not at the air show get a little something to awe them, too!). And the jet assisted take-off... YIKES! I thought my dog was going to climb the wall and hide in a chandelier! Very noisy, and very awesome! FThorn 08-22-2007, 08:54 isn't that a misnomer? I mean, they're more like ROCKETS, right? Scutter01 08-22-2007, 08:55 Originally posted by boilergonzo just tossing their jet around (presumably so folks not at the air show get a little something to awe them, too!). I don't think they do this at all their shows, but I remember one show where the four diamond jets did a slow, leisurely pass, along with one of the solos. The other solo was off somewhere doing his thing for so long that people forgot about him. The five complete their pass, getting all spectators to concentrate on them. While everyone is watching them go off to the right, the "missing" solo sneaks up on the crowd from the left and lights his afterburners right over the flightline, scaring the bejesus out of the crowd. You know he's laughing in his head at the thought of several thousand people suddenly jumping out of their skin at the noise. It was brilliant. Scutter01 08-22-2007, 08:57 Originally posted by FThorn isn't that a misnomer? I mean, they're more like ROCKETS, right? From Wikipedia: In all of these cases the term "jet" is correct but the system is more accurately called RATO. However JATO remains the most popular version, apparently due to its US origin. 4TS&W 08-22-2007, 08:59 Originally posted by indianaboy Click the Link - Just East of Indy http://www.indyairshow.com/ (http://http://www.indyairshow.com/) I'm not getting anything.. is the website down? EDIT: Disregard.. So much so that as I watched them practice at Pensacola NAS, I was intentionally looking behind my head/stands at this exact formation. I was amazed at how close you get to their practice(s) for free at PNAS. You could throw a baseball and hit one of them. I have an excellent frame from a movie where you can see the cloud form around the jet at near-Mach speed, right in front of me. boilergonzo 08-22-2007, 15:27 They do the near sonic speed sneak attack at Mount Comfort, too! The first time I about jumped out of my skin. I expect it now. Given that they are subsonic in the U.S. airshows, it makes one tremble in awe when you consider those fighting machines on a battlefield. I almost pity the Iraqi soldier who had the same response we did in the crowd when one is upon you. My show didn't have the additional "BANG" at the end theirs did! sjstill 08-23-2007, 09:47 Blue Angels just flew over the house. I have wood.....  That is all  R. My son goes to college in Pensacola so we've visited the museum a couple of times. Definitely worth the time. Pop Gunner 08-23-2007, 16:48 While making my daily deliveries today in the McCordsville,Fortville area I seen a couple Blue Angels making the inverted upside run and loop the loop run with the smoke trail to follow.Awesome! In the Hancock cnty area you can hear the roar of the jet engines all afternoon long. I took a video from my route from last year when the Thunderbirds were making their practice runs that was awesome also,I got video of them flying right overhead. R. Where does your son go to college? mpholic 08-24-2007, 10:15 Considering all the increased security these days do you think they will be doing any kind of searches for weapons? I plan on carrying and would hate to be turned away at the gate after driving all the way out there. Thanks R. Emmelman 08-24-2007, 11:56 They say on their web site under safety rules "No weapons of any kind" With thousands of people I am sure a search and wanding would not be reasonable. Also I believe that the admission is taken as you drive in. epsylum 08-24-2007, 16:49 Originally posted by FThorn isn't that a misnomer? I mean, they're more like ROCKETS, right? Technically speaking both rockets and jets use jet propulsion which just refers to throwing off mass at high speed to move an object (the reason why the term jet-ski is correct and no jet or rocket engine is being used as it is using a water jet to move it). NASA has the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), but they actually design and use rockets. I don't think I want to be the one to tell the rocket surgeons that they got it wrong. epsylum 08-24-2007, 16:49 double tap sjstill 08-25-2007, 19:17 I remember seeing this as a cartoon in the Maintenance Control office; The Theory of Jet Propulsion in Four Steps: 1. Suck 2. Squeeze 3. Bang 4. Blow I've always liked that explanation   mpholic 08-27-2007, 07:44 Went to the show and carried. No problem. The static aircraft display was pathetic. The bulk of the display was a bunch of museum pieces and most of them wanted a "donation" to let you look at them. Yea, I know it costs money to maintain them but I wasn't interested in them. I don't know if it was a security issue or the fact that the airport was too small or what but they should have had a lot more current military aircraft to look at. The airshows I attended in the military included dozens of current military aircraft. There was an F14, F15, F16, F/A18, A6, EA6, C130, C141, C5, F117, and more. With the exception of the F117 there were ladder stairs next to each aircraft so you could look into the cockpit. you could walk through the large cargo craft and see just how big they were inside. The flying demos were great although I was dispointed in not being able to see the Blue Angels take from the host airfield. In most of the shows I have seen the Blue angels are staged at the airshow and the pilots are introduced as they march to their aircraft, climb in and take off. Wonder if they have a better show in Dayton? Or maybe they are crippled by the same security issues we are. Oh, and as expected they traffic leaving the airport was awful, but that's to be expected and there isn't much that can be done about that considering the location and size of the roads leaving the airport. epsylum 08-27-2007, 18:00 Originally posted by sjstill I remember seeing this as a cartoon in the Maintenance Control office; The Theory of Jet Propulsion in Four Steps: 1. My brother knew that mantra well working on motorcycles and is used to help diagnose a problem as it needs to do all those tasks or no worky. Also it should read "The Theory of Jet Engines in Four Steps". The propulsion part would only be step 4 as steps 1-3 are one way of producing step 4. ;) vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2008, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
