View Full Version : Trophy Match Extreme Makeover

I just got off from a phone call with the custom shop of Springfield. My TropyMatch has seen better days back from when I was still doing bullseye 10 yrs or so ago, so I figured an extreme makeover is in the offing. As per SA, I can pick and choose modifications to my pistol and can buy preferred parts as long as it conforms to their quality standard. I have a week to come up with a list.

Iím thinking of sending just the slide and frame and will get new internals from bushing, sights, barrel to MSH and all parts in between.

Question: what are your recommendations for a 1911 makeover? Budget is a little tight though. Iím thinking of a Nighthawk Predator look-alike, or maybe an Ed Brown Executive. What are the parts and its makers you likely to get from for the internals? I will be most picky on the barrel (Schuemann? Kart? Bar-Sto?) as it will be a range pistol on Monday night club competitions. The internet is littered with stuffs on this topic but getting them from ka-BOGs...priceless. I also like to hear from anybody who has experience with SA custom shop. Any gotchas?

Pag natuloy ito, yung mga orig parts, puwede ulit ipamahagi. Done it before with my other piece. TIA

Go to
They have a brand new catalog. I just got mine yesterday. If I were you, I would stick with all SA parts except the barrel. Replace with a fitted Kart supported. Heine night sights and a six pack of Octoberfest after the shoot.

These I like:

For Ed Brown
- Hardcore Hammer
- Perfection Sear
- Hardcore Extractor
- Hardcore Firing Pin Stop
- Thumb safety
- Memory Groove Beavertail

For Wilson Combat
- Bulletproof Hammer
- Sear
- Bulletproof Extractor
- Bulletproof Firing Pin Stop
- Ultralight Trigger

For Smith & Alexander
- Mainspring housing and magwell

For the Springs

For the barrel
- Kart
- Barsto
- Schuemann

For the sights
- Heinie (if tactical type)
- Bo Mar (if adjustable)

Those are the parts I can suggest. The rest are almost the same to me. Regards.

Don't change anything outside the Trophy Match. It looks great as it is.

What i would change internally:

- Extreme Engineering Trigger group (hammer, sear and disconnector)
- Aftec Extractor
- Barsto barrel

thanks everybody for chiming in.
jerrytrini, I like the 6-pack part and for me, kahit anong beer. Now I remember I used to have Brownells; hahanapin ko it must be in the garage somewhere.

Valor, cut-n-pasted na yung post mo. Salamat ng marami

Paul, I think a little pimping is needed on the frame. May mga sharp edges din sa slide. Like I said this used to be a bullseye piece and it was heavily modified, kasama na 4 holes on the left side of the frame. I removed the scope so I can mate it with a Marvel.22 but somehow the plunger tube came off with the scope mount. The old look circa 1996:

I'am aiming for this minus front serration:

You would have to cover up those holes from the scope mount? You also need checkering on the front strap and nice cocobolo grips from Esmeralda.

Prices in Brownells change each time their annual catalog comes out. Just my 2 centime.

08-23-2007, 10:47
might as well order the latest catalog then.

if and when they can patch up the holes, what is the best finish for a stainless lower? na hindi halata ang pasta. Its the single hole on the dust cover that worries me; a grip can cover the 3 holes at the other end.

Yes, checkering of the front strap is a must. Cocobolo? maybe I'll try first narra from Nano Cacho (Febre Armory?). I have 5 leftover.

check out the prices of kart barrel and stormlake barrels at caspian web site, they seem to be cheaper there.

I'd send it to this guys if I were you. No pun intended towards SA. Fast turn around. or to Benny Hill

08-24-2007, 07:13
this may be similar to what you have in mind. no front serrations

He's right. Why not try other gunsmiths? Benny Hill is really popular and he's work really looks great.

thanks tagaykoyan, thats exactly the look I'm dreaming:the magwell, non-ambi, no front serration. Just an adjustable sight and its good to go. Plus one of these:

A package from SA is almost $1K already so, dalawang isip rito kasi i-supply mo your own pistol. eh, kaunting dagdag na lang, may new FA ka na.

Anong preferred niyo?
20 or 30 LPI sa front strap checkering
night sight for aging eyes
finish for stainless frame
black finish for a slide

edited: kamagong pala mga grips ko, hindi narra

my RIA is back with the 'smith for additional mods: extended thumb safety and installation of kamagong grips similar to what you have shown. here are additional (clearer) pics of my blaster's makeover.

Vicara: I like your grips. I prefer the checkered double diamond grips. I bought a Navidrex grips and was surprise that it is made in the Phil. I like it very much and the quality is very good.
For the front strap checkering i prefer 25LPI otherwise 30 LPI. For the SS frame, hardchrome, para hindi madaling magasgas and blue finish for the slide.

Tagaykoyan: I like your 2 tone RIA. One of this days bibili rin ako ng either RIA or High Standard and the same mod as you did. Chrome frame, front strap checkering,i prefer ambisafety , i prefer Videki style trigger, no magwell since i dont compete and a Navidrex double diamond grip.

Hindi ko na gagalawin ang trophy ko. I might save a bundle if I will go Mang Danny's route. I just have to figure out how to get back my very first 1911 (a very basic Colt)I left with a friend in Hawaii. Bili ko non $500.00 lang. A local store is charging $100.00 for an FFL transfer. It should be a good gun base, katulad din ng kay tagaykoyan, non-slanting ang slide seration. btw, ang ganda ng pagkagawa ng RIA mo! talo mga bigatin dito. unique look pa yung trigger mo at malinis ang magwell installation.

If the Colt is not doable then RIA it is, kaya lang mukhang wala akong nakikita sa 2 local stores in my neighborhood.

ess45, phil-made yung mga grips ko, from Nano Cacho of Febre Armory.

pahabol...buhay pa ba Febre?

08-28-2007, 07:49
Sarado na yung Febre Armory.

try mo dito I heard they'll make it to your specs what ever you want.
