View Full Version : How badly do vehicles rust up your way?

Greetings, fellow Glock Talkers. I am thinking about buying a vehicle from someone in Indy, and was wondering how much of a problem rust is up your way. Is a 10-year-old vehicle from Indiana still a pretty safe buy, or should I stick with Southern vehicles?
Any advice and input would be sincerely appreciated.
Thanks.

depends on the vehicle. My Chevys seem to last 12 years or so before the rust starts on the lower doors.

He's right...all depends on the vehicle!!
I would suggest that probably ALL makes and models are prone to rusting in some areas within the 10 year mark. Of course, as we all know, some are worse than others...
It's also entirely possible that the particular vehicle you're interested in was a "good weather only car". Plenty of folks have a good car for good weather and then a beater for snowy / icy days.
What kind of car is it? Perhaps someone here has one like it?

Mine do not at all. First thing I do with a new vehicle is get it rust proofed.

Thanks for the replies. It's a '98 F-150 4X4, so I imagine it has seen its fair share of snow. I wouldn't have even bothered to ask about an older vehicle, but I hear the metallurgy is better in some of the newer ones.

About what does it cost to get a vehicle rust-proofed?

Think I paid around $325 or so. Last one I had done was an SUV.

I had no idea such a thing was possible for that kind of price...
Have you kept the vehicles long enough to know if it seems to actually help? Or is it more of a "might not help, but can't hurt" kind of thing?
Thanks

Tough to say. It really depends on the vehicle and the owner. Cars driven in snow a lot, then put away salty in a warm garage do tend to rust. Cars occasionally rinsed clean in winter do fairly well. Thicker metal and better quality fare better than flimsy stuff. I'd put your truck in the solidly built category. One other thing that kills a car around here is parking it on dirt (or even rock driveways) in the warm months (lots of moisture underneath).
Also (and pretty important!)... WHERE in Indiana? Evansville (South) is a LOT warmer with a LOT less snow and ice than Hammond (lake effect snow and much, much colder!). Anything south of Columbus will weather like a Kentucky car. Anything north of Lafayette you may as will consider a Michigan car.
Good luck!

Platz, I have it done at Ziebart over on Creasy Lane here in Lafayette. Check the exact price, but the Ziebart will be flexible on prices, e.g. last time I had it detailed they detailed the inside and outside for a reduced fee.
Sure, I keep vehicles until the wheels fall off of them. I still drive a '99 SUV that I had Ziebarted in 2000. It's in great shape, however I am anal about PM and about keeping the G Glide Ride clean.

Isn't that a spot of pre-rust on the bumper next to the brown-painted area?
