View Full Version : PM9 question - sharp mold mark on grip?

Just picked up my new PM9 DLC, and it looks great. A very tight gun. On the left rear grip area, just below the slide, there is a small, round, sharp pointed piece that sticks out slightly. It looks to be an injection mold mark possibly, at least that's what it looks like to me. It's pretty sharp and catches the meaty thumb part of my left palm when I rack the slide. Is this supposed to be there? I'm wondering what, if anything, everyone that has this does about it? Maybe grind it down flush or just take the point off? In the meantime, I'll read the manual, clean and lube it, and wait for my order of Flitz to show up this week, and then put a few hundred rounds through it next weekend. Can't wait!
Got a picture of that sharp spot?

I'll post some pics in the morning when I get up and my eyes aren't so blurry.

Here are a couple of pictures of the sharp spot that looks like an injection mold point. Do other PM9 owners have this also, and what can be done about it?

Take a file or sandpaper and remove it.

I just looked at my PM9 and it has a very small "dot" in the exact same places as yours....but mine is very well rounded and not sharp to the touch at all. Also on my P9 it has a mark that is very similar in the same spot, but it looks more like a small "o" rather than a rounded dot.
I'd say file it off, or use a dremel tool and go easy until it's flush and smooth.
You could also use a chisel blade on an exacto knife and slice it off, slicing from the outside diameter to the center.
Is it the end of the retaining pin coming through from the right side panel

I've sent the same two pictures to Kahr Service to see what they have to say about it. Hopefully they will get back to me within the 1-2 days their auto-reply email said they would. To be safe, and especially since the gun is under warranty, I'm going to hold off on filing it down until I hear back from them, just in case there is some kind of pin there. I'll post what they say.

My Pm9 has the same bump as yours but mine isn't sharp. It is rounded and smooth. I'm sure it is just part of where the frame was held during the injection mold process ans somehow it didn't get sanded down from the factory. I would say that you could just sand it down and you will be safe.

Hopefully to comfort you some, my PM9 has a little, small, round, protrusion at exactly the same spot. It is not pointed like yours is.
I bet it's nothing but a less-than-perfect injection mold point of some kind or another.
Writing Kahr, as you did, seems like a wise move to me.

On mine there is the end of a rounded steel pin which was pushed through from the other side at that location. It looks like an assembly pin to hold the grip together. It looks like yours did not have the hole drilled all the way and pushed the plastic up when it was driven in.

I was told by Kahr that there email system won't allow pictures, it won't even allow the text message to go through. I looked at my 2 PM9s and that protrusion is definitely the other end of the retaining pin

Wow, sounds like a useless email system to me. Hope they still aren't using an abacus too ;). Thanks for the tip. I have not heard anything from them yet, and that is probably why. I will be calling them today to find out what to do. Thanks again!

I checked mine and on the right side it looks like a metal pin is inserted, on the left side it looks like either a small dimple or perhaps the pin tapers down to that side. Either way, it is not as sharp as yours is.

Update
Well, after speaking with Randy at Kahr, they paid to have my gun shipped back to them for inspection of the pin area. Over the phone, Randy and his supervisor said that either I could or they could file it down, and that it wasn't a big deal for the pin to stick through, and that maybe a pin that was too long had been used when the gun was built. When I asked if new guns had the pin sticking through, he went and actually looked at a new PM9 they had, and the pin on that gun did not stick through, and he seemed surprised. Based on that, I've asked that they look at my gun and make it right by either replacing the frame or the entire gun. My position is that on a brand new, unfired pricey $600 gun, if the pin is not supposed to come through the polymer grip when newly manufactured, then mine shouldn't either, and filing it down would not be acceptable to me. Guess we will see what they do, knowing that they think filing it down is okay. On the plus side, I'm having them put on a set of XS Big Dot sights for me while the gun is there.

Are they going to charge you for the sights?

Yes, I am paying for the XS sights, as I would expect to, as long as they do the right thing with my gun.
