View Full Version : Mossberg 500
Whats the oppinoin on the Mossberg 500 Special Purpose shotgun? I am looking at model #50420. I am looking for something relativly inexpensive. I will use it for HD, coyote hunting, and to be possibly thrown in the trunk. I can get this for about $370 out the door.
Lots of previous Mossberg threads on GT.
OK.
But a used 500a plain Jane Mossberg will get the job done for a lot less.
The pistol grip stock like the 50420 have make it kind of difficult to reach the safety on top of the receiver.
Like Blitzer said the plain Jane 18.5" 500's do the same job. I'd get one like the 50411 or one of the combo's like the 54282 or 54169.

Alternately you could find a 500 field model and order a 18.5" barrel with chokes from Havlin sales like I did.
I picked up my M500 for $87 on Auction arms, cost an additional $20 for shipping. The 18.5" barrel was $69 from Havlin, I bought a bunch of other stuff, but I think they charge $12 for shipping a single barrel. So all up I have $188 in my home defense and hunting combo.
Here's a pic of it with the short barrel on, I also have a 28" vent rib ported barrel for it:

I got a near new 500 like pictured above but with just the 28" ported vent ribbed barrel w/ chokes from a buddy I work with. He added a fiber optic bead and threw in a bunch of other stuff (ammo box, ammo, and a few other little things) for $180. I plan to use to try my hand at trap and skeet on a budget and I also plan to buy plain 18" barrel and use it for home defense. Total I think I may have $240 in it at that point.
I went ahead and picked it up. Here is a just a few of my toys I could possibly employ in my job.

I like the 18.5" barrel I got from Havlin Sales.
Here's a thread I started on it.

Huh. They have an 18.5"er that takes accu-chokes. I am listening. Actually, I may get that one instead just for the ability to use chokes. Thanks vafish.

Yep that's why I bought them.
They are also much thicker steel than the standard barrels. And at $69 a little less than the normal price for the plain 18.5" barrels that don't take the choke tubes.
They only come with 1 modified tube, but if you already have the longer barrel with choke tubes the tubes are the same.
