One opportunity I had that is not often experienced, is having my Drill Instructors report to me later in my career. I had the honor of working with my SDI (a superb Marine) 8 years after Bootcamp, when I was a Warrant Officer and he was a First Sergeant and I had another of my Drill Instructors (another superb Marine) report to me 14 years after Bootcamp when I was his Commanding Officer. My SDI and I were reunited again some 30 plus years after Bootcamp when we both attended some official functions on behalf of HQMC (He a SgtMaj and me a Colonel). Some outstanding reunions.

That's one great story. It goes to show just what the Corps is all about. Marines training and educating other Marines in the traditions and workings of the Corps so it can continue forever. Several years ago through a bit of luck, I managed to contact my Senior DI and today we communicate regularly through email and telephone conversations.

Those are the dates I was stationed at MCRD SD, worked for the property control office, supply. Although I was there much longer then that, ugh. Stationed there that is.

Went through bootcamp from Jan. 16, 2001-Apr. 13, 2001, MCRDSD, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, Alpha Company, Platoon 1138, San Diego, CA 92140.

SDI SSgt Pritchard
JDI SSgt Latimer
DI SSgt Berold
DI SSgt Reid

I remember looking across the squadbay at the airport at night then looking out my porthole across the parade deck wondering WTF was over there. For being in San Diego I was always freezing my buttocks off. Later on I was stationed there, the base still sucked but I got to see a different side of being a Drill Instructor. When they would arrive fresh from the fleet and go through DI school they were always hardcore and would give you crap constantly. After a year of being a DI they would come down to my warehouse begging for campaign cover hookups since they could never get a letter from their CO to get one then they would sleep in the OP cage (Where we kept all of the issue gear that went to DI's... Campaign covers, short and long sleeve khaki shirts, cammies, swords, pt shirts, belts, buckles, EGA's for cover, and thats about all they get). These Marines always remained hard in front of their recruits but I got to see a different side of them so it was a great experience for me. When one of my own DI's, SSgt Berold, was checking out of the depot, he came to me and thanked me for everything I had done for him since I had been stationed there. He then ripped the nametag off of his cammies and handed it to me and left. (Of course he didn't walk out in those same cammies!) That was a huge moment for me because he was the Drill Instructor who beat my squad through the Crucible and then on top of the Reaper he gave me my Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. I respected him more than any other DI I had, not just because he punched me in my throat for coming up behind him too fast, or because him saying "you piece of ****" with his Australian accent made me laught inside, but he was hard, and twice I stood face to face with him where he first told me I would make an awesome f-ing marine, then he later thanked me for the things I had done for him, and both times he gave me something that brought a sense of pride over me. These are the moments I will never forget. Happy Belated Birthday Marines and Happy Veterans Day.

Ooh-Rah Marine Corps, (clap, clap) KILL!
Do you know what Reid's first name was?

MCRD San Diego June-August 1976 Platoon 2049; Senior Drill Instructor Staff Sargent Fannon sir!

We were 2 weeks from graduation, SDI was throwing out the mail, when he was finished there was 1 letter left, he points at me and says "YOU will come into the duty hut and talk to me about this one".

When I report and called into the office there was the series commander, company commander, and 4 other officers I did not recognize including a full bird.

SDI looks at me and demands} Who the flip do you know!?
me} Sir, the private doesn't understand sir
SDI} You heard me! Just who the flip do you know!
me} Sir, the private doesn't understand what the Senior Drill Instructor means sir.

SDI tosses the envelope onto the desk; it is fancy stationary, with an embossed picture of the White House and the pre printed return address is 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC SDI} Explain that!!!
me} Sir the privet still doesn't understand sir
SDI} Well open it up and we can all find out what's going on!

My sister was a secretary for the DEA with a top secret security clearance and had been loaned to a Presidential Adviser while his secretary was on maternity leave and use of White House stationary was a perk.

Her first line "Bet this got their attention"!
You could say that!!

No honor grad here, just a simple squid that did what he was supposed to do when he was supposed to. Right after pass in review, I introduce my parents to one of my Company Commanders. My proud, and proper mother starts to say something cordial to him, and the CC abruptly interrupts her with, "I'm sorry, but I don't even know who your son is". Mom and Dad look somewhat disappointed. Immediately, I look at them and say, "That's what you want your CC to say. He doesn't know me, and that's just fine." CC looks at me, then at the parents, winks, and tells us to have a fine Navy day, then walks away. To this day my Mom and Dad still don't understand why not being known in basic training was so important.

It wasn't great, but it was better than all the other J-heads in the company. I just got home from an oil service trip to motor pool after a graveyard shift so I'm going to crash soon. I will check later tonight for you. Off the top of my head, it was 239.

239 with an M16A1 is very respectable.
Great instructors and or instruction often helps.

As an instructor myself I have taught Hunter's Safety, Junior clinics, Instruction details as a member of the USMC Rifle Team and USMC Pistol Team. Went Double Distinguished and retain High-Master status at long range discipline. Broke the Service Palma record, but alas I lost some along the way...

Lost a shoot off for the Wimbledon Cup

---and---

I shot well in boot camp, but got beat by a fellow recruit that my DI's placed under my tutelage.
Came in second in my Platoon, Series, and Company, right behind YOU!!
Know who this is ?
To this day I take great pride in your accomplishment, I shot a 236, you shot a 239. Salute.

Bandit, I missed my M16 so much I ordered an AR-15 A2 with a match grade barrel back in the '90s. Loved it, but sold it after a while since I didn't have any shooting buddies. Also, we couldn't carry ARs at the time until after the Hollywood bank robbery made all chiefs think again about firepower. For about the last 10 years, I had an issued AR until I got a new toy for this Father's Day-a Ruger SR-556 piston driven AR. I'm already carrying it on duty.

I just got a new sight for it today, but it is for relatively close combat compared to anything to be used out to 500 meters like at Edson Range. I was about to get the Eotech EXPS3 or 512/552, but the cheaper and muli-reticled Lucid HD7 won out since wifey was making really mean faces at me.

I remember the platoons after us were huge since the recruits were from schools letting out for the summer. Our platoon size got to the point where we couldn't hide in the crowd. Everyone's personality was known by all.

Always felt like some recruits of potentially high caliber were unnecessarily canned, but so it goes. Hard to gauge a teenager, or any man to the fullest extent when his nature is neither fully formed and worse still, based upon highly suppressed confines of expression.

Just like in my LEO agency, the Corps has a system of cliques. Fairness and justice in the Corps may have been a worthy goal, but it was rarely achieved. I'm like a boy scout, trying to live my life like I want my kids to live their's. We made it through recruit training better men than when we entered which helped us to better identify these injustices.

Not sure which Patoon number my father was in but I know he went to Paris Island in 1968 as a Ground Pounder then went in to Supply later on before he retired after 22 1/2 years of serving for this country and serving Vietnam (2 tours). I'll ask him about it later on today when I see him.

Made a deal with recruiter that I would join if I got to go to California(born in Illinois). I got my parents to sign as I was just 17, so no draft card for me. My brother also went to SD a few years earlier and his boot amp was 12 weeks. My boot camp was only 8 weeks as Vietnam needed more Marines. I am proud to say I was Platoon 2004 and we were the Honor Platoon. Since I wasn't 18 yet I could not go with the rest after boot, but went DLI(Defense Language Institute) in Monterey, Calif. Vietnamese 5 days a week, 8 hours a day for three months. Arrived in Vietnam late April early May and hooked up with Foxtrot Co.2/26 3rd Marine Division. They had just come off of Khe Sahn a few weeks earlier. Semper-Fi.
