Hi folks. The last couple of weeks have been a little rocky, but I am feeling better. They gave me a steroid sinus spray for my stuffy nose, while I was in the hospital, and it has been causing me trouble. I have been having pretty serious chest pain that I thought was heart-related, but it turned out that my stomach REALLY doesn't like steroids. I stopped using the stuff and I'm feeling a bit better.
I want you all to know how much I appreciate everyone's patience, during this last month. I launched this system and then almost immediately ended up in the hospital. Everyone has been very understanding and it has made recovery much easier on me. Thanks a bunch.
<hr>
OK, I have reconciled every Pay Pal transaction made from 8-30-07 to today against orders in the shopping cart and fixed every problem I found. There should be no orders that have slipped through the cracks. All orders have been (or will be) put in a processing status based on the membership level purchased. Each member's membership status on GT will be upgraded accordingly when the new system launches.
<hr>
I have built the new servers and they are ready to deploy. I haven't gone to deploy them before now due to health problems, but I am feeling better and plan to go deploy the new boxes early next week. Once they are deployed, the software upgrade will be launched and the new features and functions will begin coming online. It has been a long haul, but we are almost there.
<hr>
Due to problem orders that did not get recorded, the number of CLM's actually sold went north of 125. I have been giving it some thought and I am going to round off the number of CLM's being offered to 150 and I am going to add 50 Special Lifetime Memberships (I am not sure about that name yet, but I can't think of anything better), for a total of 200 lifetime meberships. The 50 SLM's are going to be used as giveaways and also will be given to worthy GT'ers, who will be nominated by other paid members. I haven't hammered out all the details yet. I will let everyone know when I have a better idea how it will work. Most likely, 20-30 of these SLM's will be given away in the next month and the remaining 20-30 will be given away to deserving people throughout the next year.
<b><font color="red">So, we have something like 28 CLM's up for grabs. These 28 CLM's REALLY will be the last of them offered. They are available in the shopping cart now and as before, you can upgrade from another membership level, if you have already purchased one.</font>
http://shop.glocktalk.com/
I know that I said I wouldn't bump up this number again, but I want to have a round number of these memberships and there is also another fairly big expenditure I need to make. The problems recently with the images not displaying on the site have been caused by power outages at my data center. Their UPS is supposed to cover me, but it obviously isn't working completely. I want to buy an Uninterruptable Power Supply big enough to support all of GT's servers for a decent amount of time. This will cost a good bit, but it is necessary.
Also, there were a large number of people who sent me disappointed emails after the last of the CLM's were gone before. This will give some of them a chance they missed out on the first time.</b>
Anyway, these last CLM's are first come-first-served, as before and when they are gone, they are gone forever. Really, this time. Thanks again to everyone. Eric

Eric, I hope you read this thread every now and then. I tried to call you but can never get through.
I am very interested in picking up a CLM but wanted to run an idea by you first. How about a special issue CLM for supporting members? This could be a great opportunity for you AND supporting members.
If you decide not to offer a "supporting member CLM" then by all means email me an invoice and I will pay for the standard CLM.

Honest question here:
If one purchases a CLM, can one transfer it to a different name. I don't necessarily mean a different person(s)/group(s) (although that is a good other question)...but I mean if one for whatever reason decides to change their screen name (registering for a new account), would it be transferrable there??
I mean if one had a screen name that they later just wanted to change (or is this better answered in the light of another question posed, such as, can one currently change their screen name?)
thanks.
I use third person because I am not speaking necessarily for us, personally.

Most message forums will allow you to change your user name without creating a new account.
Most message forums don't want people to have more than one account/name.
My guess is that you would simply change your name/logic and nothing else.

Eric,
I hope you are feeling better! I would like to purchase a CLM, however I did an on-line order for some GT merchandise well over a year ago, paid via PayPal and never received the products. I sent you a few emails and PM's and never received a response. I love the web site and visit it often and have received some real sound advice by the GT members. Anyway, I would sign-up in a minute if I knew for certain I would get what I paid for this time.
Maybe you can shoot me an email at:

when you get a chance and I'll go from there.

Eric,
I run data centers for a living (hundreds of thousands of square feet of them), so I have some insight you might be able to use. If you're getting UPS conditioned power from your Data Center and want to put a UPS in your rack(s), *please* consult with your data center operator to be sure the UPS you get will NOT cause their (larger) UPS to think there's a line anomaly on the downstream side, or your small on to think there's one from the upstream side. Trust me, as someone with multiple multi-megawatt facilities, one of the things that upsets customers who put in their own UPS is finding out they made a new problem thinking they'd protect themselves form an outage on a large unit. Usually, these are are people who want to plug in a few kW of 'not designed for that' desk side or network UPS units. The specific things we data center guys are looking for is if your UPS will result in a modified/step approximated sine wave, VS a perfect (mechanically generated or digitally simulated) AC sine wave. When you plug a UPS into another UPS, and they use modified/approximated sine waveforms, the UPS will see the jumps in power up and down instead of a curve and may respond as if the power is a surge, in which case it'll bypass the power BACK, and the first UPS might go into bypass, down the load, etc. This is all kinds of bad for everyone involved :) Feel free to buzz me w/ any questions; I might be able to help.
And yes, I did send in my CLM payment, so I'm puttin' my money where my mouth is as far as supporting GT financially and not just with random geek info *grin*
Get better soon, Eric!

I would not use PayPal to pay for a gum ball. In light of Ebay's recent policy change regarding firearms and firearms accessories, I cant believe that you are sponsoring them by taking money via? The minute their new policy went into effect I canceled both my eBay account and my PayPal account. "Its a matter principalities Smokey" they were definitely messing with my emotions. There are alternative PayPal sites.
Obviously, there are those among GT who would compromise principles to send and received money conveniently, if enough of us did what I did IT WOULD affect eBay's bottom line, a nasty gram to them poo pooing their policy is not enough. Cancel your accounts and find another auction site to do business with, for those who miss the parallels , Ebay owns Paypal.
Being that I'm technically a commercial entity (kitchen table FFL) would this allow me to post ads in the classifieds? If not, would you let me know what's needed?
Thanks!

well. eric doesn't really say,
but it's my guess, that it shows your commitment level!!

and it shows others that you are a part of an club, fans of the best handgun in the world, and..
not only that, pretty much all the members would be, or are, or have been certified, badge wearing, sworn LEO's,
myself included (have been at one time)
And thus, you get to post cute cat pics to anyone you disdain and call them crackheads and thus, negate their opinions and so on, publicly to others!!
But I really dunno.
It's just a guess.
after all, leo's are a team right!?, somehow sticking together and stuff, I might be wrong on that, but as theGut tells me, I'm usually right about these guesses.

Guys, I am going to say once again that what you are paying for is to support the site. I am working on adding benefits and features to reward those that do step up, but if you approach this like you are buying a car or something, you are not going to be happy with your purchase. I am doing the best I can to get back into the swing of things and get the paid tier going. I have a limited amount of time and energy to go around right now and I am applying that to getting the nuts and bolts needed to make the paid tier happen taken care of. I don't have time to pitch the paid tier to everyone who wants to kick the tires. If you want to wait to see what the paid tier is going to offer before buying, wait. There is nothing wrong with that. When the CLM's are gone though, they are gone forever.
If you want want one, you are going to have to take a chance on me. I have put a decade of my life into this site and I didn't do it to screw people now. I am going to do everything I can to make this system worth it. It isn't about the money to me. The money just gives me the ability to make it happen. Building things like this is what I really enjoy and making it as good as possible is a matter of personal pride for me.
I have outlined many of the features that will be included in the paid tiers already. If you are curious, do some reading. If you don't want to sift through everything, search by my user name in this forum. CLM's may end up with a feature or two that the other levels don't, I haven't decided yet. What that level of membership will give you is the same benefits as a Platinum Member without having to pay a fee each year. It also gives you the special icon. Beyond that, I hope that it gives you the satisfaction of helping to insure this site's future.
I don't want anyone's money unless their primary consideration is to help support the site. I don't want the headache of having to deal with people that have unrealistic expectations and I really do not want to disappoint anyone. I've tried hard to be as open and honest as possible about what was happening and what people could expect throughout this process. I want people to feel good about helping out. If you have questions that I have not answered, if you want to see the system before purchasing, if what I have said hasn't laid your concerns to rest, then by all means, keep your money in your pocket and wait to make your decision until the system launches. I would much rather you do that than have to deal with complaints and buyer's remorse.
For those that have already paid, I want you to know that I really appreciate your trust and support. I am working as hard as I can to make this happen and it will happen very soon now. As I mentioned before, the time on everyone's memberships doesn't start ticking until the paid tier launches. Please bear with me a little longer.
Lastly, as I have also said several times now and as I said in the sticky thread in this forum's index, concerning what this forum's intended purpose is, I didn't put this forum up to give people a place to debate the purchase of a membership or to criticise or debate the concept of the paid tier system. The decision has long since been made and we are moving forward. If you don't like the idea of the paid membership tier and don't want to be a part of it, that is your right, but please do not complain about it here. If you are trying to decide if you want to make a purchase and you want more information, everything I have to offer gets posted here and I will post updates as quickly as possible. If you have a concern/complaint/question concerning your order, please contact me directly and privately at webmaster@glocktalk.com . I have never and do not now handle that sort of thing publicly.
Folks, I am working on this and will launch the system as soon as possible. The software upgrade is the biggest part of the changeover and it is going to be a *****. Nothing else can happen until this occurs. The vBulletin scripts to convert the old-style database to the new one are failure-prone with a board of my size and if I do move forward with the changeover and the process fails, not only will there be downtime for the amount of time the process ran, but it will take five or six hours just to restore back to a point where the old system is once again usable and I can try again. When I do this, it has to be right.
I haven't deployed the new servers yet, so I have one set up here at home and I am running database conversion simulations on it now. When I get the thing working properly, I will make the changeover. Once that happens, the other features will begin to drop into place very quickly. I just have to get over this hump now.
I have expanded on what I am doing a bit in this message, but I really haven't said anything here that hasn't already be said at least once elsewhere and I have just spent 45 minutes typing this.
I haven't posted a more comprehensive list of the features for the different levels yet, because I am having a hard time establishing what goes here and how much of it everyone gets. It is hard to visual all of this without actually seeing it. I will have the bare bones of the system up within the next few days and once I do, it will be much easier to map out the benefits and features for each level. I don't want to post anything now and have to eat my words later.
As most of you doubtlessly know, I am recovering from a heart attack. I am doing better, but dealing with this limits my resources of time and energy. I decided that the time I have to apply to this system was better spent getting the database changeover ready to happen, than spending time here re-iterating what I have already said. I haven't had much new to report and I won't until the system is upgraded. Even so, I understand that many people are getting antsy to see some progress and I should have been more considerate of their concerns. For that, I apologize. I will try to post more about what is going on and where I am at in the process. All I ask is that everyone look for answers here before posting new questions here or emailing/PM'ing about the upcoming system.
You have all been very patient during my convalescence and I want you all to know how much I appreciate it. The timing of my heart attack couldn't have been much worse, but everyone has been gracious and understanding. It has meant a lot to me. Anyway, I better get back to work. I will post more before the end of the week. Eric

Eric,
I have paid for my CLM and am happy if I never see anything other than the site continue. You have provided us a great thing in this board, and it is appreciated.
May the hecklers remember that if they provide no money they are still getting out more than they put in.

I have been a member here for almost 7 years now. It has been a great source of information. I have not been active recently but Eric's work over the time I have been a member is well worth the $250 for the Charter membership.
I have donated in the past, but never did get the contributor icon (probably better that way..... lol)
I hope I get #147 but we'll see!

OK, I'm in for a CLM. Don't stop by much anymore, but I do think the site merits support.

Thanks guys, like the name says I'm a quadriplegic veteran, been lurking here for awhile. Finally joined to say something to the dude flying our flag upside down. Haven't yet, but sure pisses me off.

Got that off my chest. :puking:
Got started here watching some of the veterans, great guys, thanks. I been on the VA train 17+ years, always learning. Might even able to add to the discussion, hoping so anyway. And the rest of y'all too. Right minded folks.
I didn't get a contributor icon yet either ?
Looking forward to making 10 posts so I can make my own avatar..Yeehaw!

Sent my contribution in and got a response.
I contributed because of what I have learned and the sense of community this site has provided to me over the years. I didn't have a father who showed me about guns and hunting. I didn't have friends that were interested in any of this stuff. I had to teach myself about what some take for granted. This site is one of the better sites that I have visited over the years and I have learned a lot. For that I want to show my appreciation.
Thank you

Steve, this is the third or forth smartass comment you have made in this forum. If you are trying to piss me off, you are getting there. Why don't you give it a rest? Eric

Since you posted publically and then PM'd me privately, I'll re-post your PM and my response here:
Re: Your Conduct on Glock Talk
Eric,
I've contributed to GT in the past. Check your records. I love GT.
I'm used to dealing with people who are as good as their word. It bothers me that this doesn't appear to be the case with the GT owners/operators. Several times you have said something and later retracted it.
I'm going to drop it now on the additional CLM sale issue. However, if in the future you say something, and then retract it, is it wrong of me to point it out, and is it wrong for that to bother me?

Steve, you have made several smartass comments concerning the paid tier and you are beginning to piss me off. If you don't want to be a part of the new system, don't. It is simple as that. If you want to continue enjoying my hospitality though, stop poking me with a stick. I am not sure why you have a bug up your ass about this, but I have had enough. Stop pushing me. Eric

While not rich enough for a CLM, I did just kick in another $10.
Thanks for keeping GT going Eric.

This post doesn't fall into the category of 'giving it a rest' Eric has asked the members here to bring problems to him privately more times then I can count. I suspect posting a grievance publicly and repeatedly is what's getting you in hot water.
Past that, at the end of the day this is a privately owned site, Eric can make changes with or without explanation. If any of us don't like the changes or the way the site is run we can choose not to come here.

OK, since you saw fit to post a private communication publicly, I will post my response publicly as well. I think it was pretty damned tacky of you to do this, Steve.
My response:
Is it wrong for something to bother you? No it is not. Is it wrong for you to repeatedly bust my chops about it publicly? You bet. You couldn't have simply done me the courtesy to write me with your complaint? There is no handbook to the operation of a site like GT. I am flying by the seat of my pants. If you think you can run such a site better, I welcome you to try.
I haven't promised someone a liver and then backed out. I changed the number of memberships for sale on MY site. Honestly, it surprises me that this should bother you in the least. It bothers ME that you would be so judgmental. You have a lot of damned nerve to call my word into question over something like the number of memberships I decide to sell, especially when you didn't even buy one of the freaking things. Whatever. What you think of me really isn't that high on the list of things I may lose sleep over tonight. You go right ahead and pass judgment on me if you feel you have the right. You don't get to use the site that I provide you to squeeze my shoes though.
I love GT too, Steve. If I didn't, I would not put up with all the crap I have had to over the years, to keep this place open. I would not find myself responding to someone like you, who thinks they have the right to question my integrity over something like this. I'll let you in on a little secret: You are not one of my favorite people either, but we do not have to like each other for you to enjoy the site and for me to run the place. All I am asking from you is a little courtesy and maybe, if it isn't too much trouble, a little consideration and understanding of how difficult a job it is to run this place. Generosity of spirit is a much more important attribute to me than financial generosity. I am not perfect by a damned sight, but I am the guy that built this place and spent the last decade of my life keeping it going and growing. Doesn't that bank me any leeway with you? Don't feel you need to answer that. It was mostly rhetorically asked. Maybe it is something you could think on though next time I fall short of your high standards. Eric

Folks, I will not put up with crap like this. I try damned hard to be fair and friendly and maybe some people misinterpret my open nature as weakness. I do not and would not ever presume to tell people how they should think or feel about me, this site or how I run the place. I WILL NOT allow someone to call me out here though. I do not handle customer service issues or complaints publicly and no one has the right to expect me to or try to make me do so. I think it is damned rude for someone to attempt it. What just happened here is a member attempting to engage in a public contest with me and that is just not going to happen. I would close this place down before I put up with bull**** like that.
I am doing the best I can to get the new system implemented and to make the new system as good as possible for everyone. I know that I will never make everyone happy and I am long past the point where I still harbor the illusion that my efforts will cut me any slack with some people. I don't think it is too much to ask people to share their complaints with me by email or by PM. Eric
