View Full Version : prior service
Does anyone know if you still have to do basic training for the coast gaurd if you were prior service.
I'd follow the FAQ at www.gocoastguard.com then you can accurately describe your circumstance.
Does the Coast Guard take people with prior military service?
The Coast Guard is hiring prior-service people. Call 1-877-NOW-USCG and speak with the recruiter nearest you to determine eligibility and pay grade upon entry.
If you can't find out through this channel, put another post and I'll try to find out for you.
Good Luck and it is a great service

The best 4 years of my life. Never regret joining. I never was stationed on a ship or boat. I am only 5'10" and I heard you had to be at least 6' tall to be assigned to one. The reason given to me was that if your ship/boat sank, you could wade ashore :animlol: but I don't believe that.
I was prior service and the month i was to report, they canceled that prior service company and asked if i wanted to wait for the next one or go thru reagular basic. I choose regular basic as it would get out at the same time(except i got held back for two weeks for swim problems) at the time i went '87 they did not like prior service to well in prior or basic because they were thought to know to much or acted like it.
I served on the Polar Star WAGB-10(Deep Freeze88 Solo below) and at Station San Diego(Station Vacation San Diego)"87-'91
I was a prior service ArmyMP. The Guard sent me to a 2 or 3 week indoc at Cape May N.J. and then on to Governor's Island.
I loved the Island, loved the Group, and Loved the Station. Best duty ever.
They built a new hotel and all sorts of new housing on G.I. then closed the Island - the whole DISTRICT. I thought that was a mistake.
USCG THIRD District forever!

Wow! I was on GI when my dad was in the Army and when I was in the CG. Dad was MP and I am presently going back in the NG as 31B. Geez, what a small world.
