View Full Version : Ugh I can't decide... GLOCK 17 or 19.
Not really asking for advise, I just can't make up my mind here and I'm ranting to myself a little.
Glock 17 or GLOCK 19.
I've got 1000 rounds of 9mm to burn up and I don't own any anything in 9mm. I need to buy something.
It's going to either be the 17 or the 19. I just haven't decided what yet. I like the look of the 19 over the 17 but the 17 is more comfy for tactical shooting.
Already bought the GLOCK 22 and 23. Love both but my 23 was the Gen 2 and I don't find the 19/23/32 Gen 3's to fit my hand well so maybe the 17 gen 3... UGh.
Choices choices.

Are you going to carry it or just shoot it?

Problem solved. Try the M&P 9mm, too.

How bout a nice Beretta in 9mm....They are sweeeeet! And it sounds like you like the larger framed guns. Maybe a HK HUM??. Then there is Smith & Wesson M&P and the Walther P99 and Sig has a couple of offerings. All great guns
Look at them all and take your time...especially if your buying new...cause it's like buying a new car...as soon as you walk out the door with it then it's used and the cash value drops like a rock!
Have fun shopping
Mick
My solution would to be buy both. I couldn't decide if I wanted a Sig 226, an M&Pc or a G19, so I bought all 3.

Take two, they are small!
If the 17 feels more comfortable to you then you already have your answer for which one to get.
If you are buying either just to shoot the ammo then I will take the ammo off of your hands and save you the hassle of making this decision:)

Don't buy one based on looks. Get the one that feels right to you. That's the one you'll like the most in the long run and end up shooting more. Go for the 17.
Well...
My current carry gun is the HK P2000 in .40 caliber. Beautiful piece let me tell you. The GLOCK 23 Gen 2 fits my hand good but the Gen 3, I don't know... I have a problem with the finger grooves pushing my middle finger into the trigger guard too hard and its not comfortable but I manage.
The GLOCK 22 Gen 3 I bought fits my hand fine but I don't like to carry full sized GLOCKS. I don't like the way the full size one looks either. I actually sold my GLOCK 22 though because I had too many .40's.
I like the M92 btw but I don't think it would be something I would buy. I also like the P226. I like the P226 alot but I can't see myself spending $700+ dollars on a 9mm when I can get a GLOCK for $450 ish locally.
I was actually going to bring the GLOCK 17 home tonight but by the time I got to the store I was going to get it from, the manager who could do the paperwork left for the night. They called him and asked him to come back but he was already on the highway, told me to come back tomorrow and said he would throw in another 17 rounder and box of free ammo.
Considering this will be mostly for tactical shooting and I carry my P2000 anyway, I'll most likely get the GLOCK 17. Really don't need a GLOCK 19 for carry.

The Glock 19 or 23 feels better in my hand than the Glock 17. Besides, the mid-sized frame Glocks are also easier to conceal than the full size models if you want to do CCW!
Thats what I use my HK P2000 for. I don't know why but I've never been comfortable carrying a GLOCK with one in the chamber. I like the heavy trigger pull of the first shot on my HK P2000 .40cal Version 3.
When I bought my Glock 19, the only thing I could think about was getting a Glock 17. I traded in some of my guns for the $$$ to get a Glock 17. Now I have them both. I can never decide which to carry. I love both of those guns. I think they are 2 of the finest guns ever made.

The honest truth....whichever you choose, you'll be happy

If both fit your hands equally then go with a G19. You can get the G17 down the road but it's hard to beat the G19's versatility.

Have to agree!
I bought Judy a G19 for Christmas 2005, and fell in love with it!
Everybody Needs A G19! :>)
I bought myself a G17 in June of 06. The gun paid for itself in a year from ammo savings alone (vs. .45 ACP). I added DP FO/Adj sights and a Hogue grip.
Every time I handle my G17, I wonder why I'd ever want anything else! ;>)

Yeah, that's why I bought one, but also because the G17 just really didn't fit my hand well at all.
If both fit your hand well, I'd go for the G17 for capacity, sight radius, and barrel length. Don't be afraid (as I'm sure most aren't) to raise the (cleared) gun to shooting grip. I handle the heck out of a gun before I buy it. I've seen guys buy a gun without even holding it....not a good idea IMHO unless you've shot it and know it's what you want.

to me if your going to carry you get a 26... if you want a full size you choose 17 or 19 and choose based upon what fits your hand.

Ugh - IT'S TIME FOR A CAVEMAN REVIEW!!!!!!!!!!
19 = smaller grip/easier to carry
17 = larger grip/more accuracy (longer barrell)/better for targets
Good luck! I do not envy your position, but that's how I made my decision.

I bought the 17 originally, and then got the 26. Never had any intrest in the 19. If I had to pick one I'd pick the G26 because it's my daily carry gun, but the G17 is a better combat pistol if you're looking for a solid shooter that isn't going to be used exclusively (or often) for concealed carry.
Go out and buy the 19. Seriously.

You answered your own question, get the G17.
You answered your own question, get the G17.
Yeah... I pretty much did. The finger groves on the Gen 3 GLOCK 19 make it not fit my hand right and I couldn't find a used GLOCK 19 Gen 2 anywhere.
I fondled both the GLOCK 19 and the GLOCK 17 and decided on the GLOCK 17 because a. I'm going to use this for a tactical shooting pistol and b. I won't carry it much if at all. I normally carry my HK P2000.
GLOCK is home here with me now. It's one of those newer US made framed ones though. Not that it matters or anything.
Now I need to get an extended slide mag and slide release and maybe some 3-dot night sights.

Good choice on the 17.....I pick mine up in a couple hours
I'm not sure why people claim the G17 is inherently a better combat piece than a G19. The elite Israeli units have been using the G19 for a while. You would think that if anyone would know a thing or two about combat pistols it would be them.
It's going to either be the 17 or the 19. I just haven't decided what yet. I like the look of the 19 over the 17 but the 17 is more comfy for tactical shooting...
Personally I'd go with whatever looks best. As this is an deeply misunderstood aspect of shooting. No seriously consider handsize. I hate the G19 3rd gen finger grooves where as on the G17 3rd gen I like them just fine. That said I own both or several actually. On my G19 3rd gens I remove the finger grooves. Truth is unless your a Master class shooter in USPSA you won't know the difference between the two. G19's seem to work just fine for killing people ie "tactical shooting" for more than a few contractors in Iraq. Go with either or heck both.
Well, I ended up getting a GLOCK 19 Gen 3 too. Picked up a used one for a pretty good price with Trijicon Night Sights and 4 magazines.
Had the same issue. After trying them out, the G19 was just too small in my hand. The G17 felt perfect.

Went to the Gunshow in phx today and had the EXACT same deliemma(sp) and mine was for a IWB CCW, and i went w/ the 17. No use in getting a gun that does not fit your hands. Recoil is nothing on it, and its pretty darned accurate. Choice is your and you are lucky, because you can't go wrong either way. Oh, btw this is my first glock, so howdy everyone.
Congratulations on both. While the 19 might be a tad more concealable, the 17 is hardly huge; it's literally about the same size as a Colt Commander. Concealibility is frankly more a matter of holster and clothing choice anyhow, in my experience. I'm not a huge guy, and I have no problems in carrying my G17 OR my G21. Blade-Tech IWB holsters are my first choice for concealed carry for my Glocks.
Best, Jon

I can't decide either which is why I got both!
However as I shoot them more and more I kind of like the G19 more. The finger grooves don't exactly match up to my fingers but for some reason when I hold the G19 it feels much more firm and secure than with a G17.
Plus it's much easier to conceal for some reason (even though the grip is only like 1/2" shorter).

Glock 19 is the most popular glock........for a reason.
Enjoy Both!!!!

If you have a carry gun and this is for IDPA/IPSC you definately want the G17or want to consider the G34- same gun longer barrel.
The G17 and the G34 are probably the most popular guns used in comp shooting. I don't recall ever seeing a G19 at a shoot.
The G17 vs G19 should be a tacked post at the top of the page.
The answer should read; Get what feels best to you first, worry about carrying and concealing it after you've made your mind up. Anyone would be better served with a pistol that fits their particular hand rather than concealability being the determining factor. Both pistols can be concealed.

If you are just wanting to burn ammo, buy a 40-9 conversion barrel for your .40, and spend a $100 bux instead of $500 bux.

I was actually looking for a G26 of G17 when I came across a G19. So now I have two G19's and want to pick up a G26 and G17. Then when I have both of those I want to pick up a G22 :)

That is pretty much it. I think the 19 is the best for all around. But comfort is important.

Ah yes, That is the right answer. :wavey:
Cheaper practice then your .40 models. Great guns. Check out mine. I just shot the G-17 for the first time today. Awesome.
I have the same problem with the compact models. They're great to conceal, but the finger grooves squish my middle finger into the bottom of the triggerguard making it uncomfortable for me. The full sized models fit my hand like a glove though. Tough call. I'd go with the 17 if it were me.

I really love the look and the feel of my G19! It is very well balanced.

I like the Glock 17 more. The full sized Glocks feel better in my hand. The only upside I see to getting the 19 is it's very slightly smaller and maybe more concealable size. Both are great guns though.

Glock19
The Glock 19 is the exact same gun mechanically as the Glock 17, except 1/2 inch shorter from the muzzle back, and 1/2 inch shorter from the bottom of the grip up.
It is the most popular because it fits the majority of standard sized hands, plus smaller for LEOs.

You made the best choice, both!!!

How does a G19 fit smaller hands than a G17? :headscratch:

If you have big hands like me, the bottom of the G19 grip is enclosed in my grip, which is not comfortable.
My wife's hands fit her G19 perfect, the bottom of her grip stays above the bottom of the pistol grip. She should be picking it up in a week, now we will have two Glocks!!!

Hello
I dont own neither, but have rented them both. My hands are medium size. (At least, i use medium size gloves) and the grip (and my lousy groups) are better with the 17 than with the 19. I feel more confy with the 17.
Of course, i guess that with training that should not bother. What do you like best?
