Hey gals (and you perverted men that shark these waters ;) ),

My wife complains about these little brown sun spots on her face. They've been there for a few years and she's tried microdermabrasion; it workes but they reappear in short order.
Within the past month she's gone off of birth control pills (first time in 18 years). She wonders if this will make a difference.

Otherwise, what do you know of that might help with these? She's willing to undergo chemical peels, etc. Any suggestions? Thanks! :)

the dermatologist can give her Rx strength bleaching cream that might help. Otherwise, some good coverage makeup that doesn't feel heavy can make her feel much better.

you have to devote extra attention to romance, for some months.

kinda like acne, and clearasil.

There are several things that a Dermatologist can do to help.

Be very careful and see a dermatologist. I just went and had skin cancer on my nose. I now have a major reconstruction in the works because I waited so long. I hope all it is is sun spots, but get it looked at pronto. I wish I had.

I had a chemical peel done on my face in April. I loved the results but it will not get rid of sunspots (I was a lifeguard for 7+ years and never wore sunscreen on my face). I was told that for the tiny broken capillaries in my face and for sunspots that they could do laser resurfacing. I have no idea what the costs on this are, but you can inquire with an asthetician in a plastic surgeon's office about it.

I switched BCPs last spring. In about three months the dark spots I had from them had faded completely. She might want to wait until January or so and see if it takes care of itself first. Of course, it might take that long to get in to see a derm so waiting may not matter too much.

Hmmm... Tiny broken capillaries in the face is also indicative of some pretty hard boozing over the years, too...

Or tiny broken capillaries in the face can be indicative of chronic illness and medications over the years... as in my case. I doubt that the sum total of alcohol that I have consumed in my lifetime has reached 1 gallon yet. :)

Once you see the doc, he or she may write a prescription for a skin lightener that, with time, may work to make the spot(s) lighter. I think there is no absolutely guaranteed solution.

I will not deny that I do drink and at times have done so heavily, but I seriously doubt that is the cause for the few broken capillaries that I do have. The more likely answer is exactly the one I gave. I have NEVER put sunscreen on my face up until about a year ago. All my attempts at using sunscreen on my face in my youger years only left me with a very serious rash on my face, so I was directed by a dermatologist NOT to put anything on at all.

Well, I guess you had to pick your poison. Rash versus skin cancer or the other sun related stuff you're experiencing. I find it very hard to believe that a dermatologist couldn't have recommended sunscreen for sensitive skin. There are prescription ones out there, too.

Considering I'd already been using a facial sunscreen deemed "safe for babies" and was still having issues, maybe that's why he gave me the advice he did.
