Most of us will never be in this type of situation but just incase, it’s always good to be ready. I am curious to know what is everyone else’s SHTF weapon.

For now, mine is a Mossberg 500. I plan on getting an AR after the first of next year.

SHTF? DPMS AP4 in attached photo. 19-round mags full of .308 ammo. Kahles 2-7x scope with multiple zeroes out to 600 yards. Mounted in a Larue SPR 1.5. I may get a small dot sight in a 45 degree mount for close-range shooting.

For bumps in the night, I have a Mossberg 500 with 18-1/2" barrel (no pic).

Here is mine, do you think it can take bayo? I got more than 5 US made parts in this gun so I am good.

It's a toolbox. You pick the right tool for the job.

If I had to narrow it down, I'd go with the AR, mainly because I have the most rounds downrange with that gun, and 250+ yard engagements would be pretty unlikely if the SHTF in these parts.

Edit: Ever shoot buckshot with that pistol grip mossy? Ow. Not for me.

It is not water damaged, but UPS played basketball with it. That is the good side of the box. The bullets inside were fine. That box was packed in another box, and I swear it had been dropped two or three times. I just got that from outdoormarksman.com last week.

Glock 36
Romanian WASR 10/63 - Side Folder
Mossberg 500a w/Knoxx SpecOps and tacstar side saddle.

Glock is on my hip at all times except for at work, until bed time then it sits in the night stand beside the mossberg. In the case nearby is my WASR and extra mags loaded and ready to go.

Decent amount of ammo on hand, and the ol' lady knows how to shoot. Sorry my camera isn't that great.

I have 2 full auto's but you are right AMMO COSTS TOO MUCH! Going to get some cheap (22lr) for my Ruger 10/22 today $8.85 a box of 500.

And your point? Just kidding around.

Sure most of the scenarios where SHTF are illusory, but it is still nice to have something around in case the improbable becomes real.

It is obvious to anyone with the simplest powers of observation that our society is in a decline. I'm in law school and it is quite obvious that the system is not built to serve and defend the average law abiding citizen. The system is built to protect illegal immigrants, criminals, corrupt amoral corporations and institutions, and jackbooted Jacobins.

Might as well be prepared.

I agree a Mossberg 500 or 590 and a Glock 19 or Glock 23 would be just fine.

Depending on how long the SHTF would be you might want a 22lr for small game but the Mossberg can handle medium sized - large game.

Always one in every crowd, eh?

One what? Thinker? Guilty.

Look at the photos. It is obvious a lot of people did not give it any thought. They saw guns, bought guns, now call them their SHTF guns.

What does SHTF mean to yall?

To me it means, a firearm good at short range, good a longer ranges, OK on people but also Ok for hunting if need be. Enough power to take out a vehicle as well as a starving dog. Ammo should be common and reasonably priced. Fully automatic not required but a semi-auto rate of fire might be necessary for multiple targets. A SHTF plan may include more than one gun but it sure is difficult to lug around 4 hanguns, 2 shotguns, 3 rifles and 9 kinds of ammo!

A SHTF plan should cover many scenerios, If my house burns down or is burglared and I only have on gun left, I can continue with my life, protecting my family and home, hunting, whatever.

I have guns for hunting, I have guns I pick up when something goes bump in the night, I have guns I keep handy in case of a grouchy bear or moose or mad dog. I have a gun handy I could use to stop a vehicle should someone try to run me off the road. And I nearly always carry a self-defense handgun.

But I have one package that consists of a 308 semi-auto carbine, several magazines, and a goodly supply of ammo. It is packaged seperately and stored apart.

Maybe it is the lack of a SHTF plan that bothers me.

Stupid
11-10-2007, 22:26
Well, is this SHTF just some excuse to show off your collection?

When S - really - HTF, I wouldn't throw away the shotgun, but wouldn't grab it at the first place. During such time, I would consider only 1 factor - ammo availability to decide which gun I choose.

In my case, it would be my AR and Sub2000 as i have plenty of 223 and 9mm (both live ammo and components).

On a second thought, since my closest Walmart keeps a large qty of 22, maybe I should add a 22 rifle to my collection.

I think SHTF can mean a lot of different things; People that were still around after Katrina were in a SHTF situation (trust me, I was there), but people who have a home invader at 0230Hrs. are also in a SHTF situation... It would seem to me that your SHTF gun is the one you have with you... don't ALWAYS have a choice. Even if you think you plan for every contingency.

Yeah, given a choice I would (probably) take my AR or Mossberg to a fight first. But SHTF can happen at the food court in the mall while your with your wife and kid(s). In which case your SHTF gun becomes whatever you (hopefully) brought with you and (hopefully) practiced with.

I think everyone made some really great picks and I'm definitely not knocking anyones choice of weapon because I know this is halfway meant in fun. But you usually don't get to pick your fights unless your the fool who starts em.

Peoples perception of what is "SHTF" is as varied as the things that they have to keep there Loved Ones safe.My definition will be more than be likely different than yours. This a scenario that is played out in everyones mind to each percived threat and there responses to them.We all deal with them in our own way.We may not agree with others and there views. Then the question begs - Whose Right and Whose Wrong.JMTCs Kirgi 08.

SHTF for me means temporary or partial or total collapse of society and infrastructure. That means I have to take care of my loved ones and protect them WITHOUT help from the gov't at any level; LEO or feds.

My Glock 21 & Marlin for the wife, DPMS A-15 & Kimber for me, extra S&W 4506 & Winchester for guest adult.

I have food, clothing, shelter, fuel and first aid for about a month. Will continue to increase these abilities.

At the present time, yes.

Thought unlikely to happen in my lifetime, I can think of three separate occasions in the history of my country where S actually HTF, and it was necessary for a good number of good people to arm themselves to protect their life and property; the Revolutionary war, the war of 1812, and the Civil war. Much smaller examples in modern times would be the LA riots in the early '90's, and Katrina.

Odds are better than not that my weapons will never shoot anything but paper.

That scenario hit me in '68 and the Detroit riots were in full swing. We lived 3 miles from the city limits, and posted lookouts armed with shotties at all the corners. After reading the posts, I'm happy with my Mossberg 500 with pistol grip, a Kahr 9MM, Charles Daly 9mm, Several .22 pistols, and a .22 rifle. They fit the requirements of plentiful and cheap ammo, shootability, defense, and fun. Nothing wrong with that!

Yes, but what if you have no training on that rifle and it does not come with extra ammunition or magazines?

Ammo and guns will be barter gold at the very least. I doubt they will be lying around.

If I may...What Big A could have meant was that if the SHTF in the sense of us against them ("Them" could be a wide variety of possibilities), Then it wouldn't be hard to aquire a rifle on the "battlefield" so to speak. Imagine that you were a soldier at Normandy and you were issued a Thompson. I personally would have looked to find a Garand or Carbine, which wouldn't have been difficult to find due to the fallen soldiers.

And then again...I could be wrong.

Thanks for saying it for me.

That is what I was getting at. A Red Dawn scenario where we're fighting foriegn troops on our soil or another US civil war.

Although Katrina was a SHTF scenario for those involved, I feel a shotgun and pistol would do fine in that situation to defend your self and property until order could be restored.

jrs93accord,

That is a beautiful FAL. Is It a DSA rifle? Details please.
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m8/jamesrea_2006/025_25.jpg

It is a DSA SA58 Medium Contour that I bought from a guy in Michigan last year for a really good price. It was practically new. It originally had a 21" barrel with an integrated muzzle brake. I had the barrel shortened to 18" and a Steyr short type FH installed. I also picked up a new DSA Extreme Duty Scope Mount up from an individual for $73 (shipped). I also installed the DSA Belgium type handguards.

Sorry it took so long to answer you.

I like it ALLOT! Mag changes aren't as quick as with an AR, but they are still pretty fast. Your hand naturally presses the release button while gripping the mag high up. They have all kinds of after market accessories if you wanted to add a VFG, but I have no intentions of getting one myself. The going rate for them now is around $2000.

A person's SHTF arsenal is really nothing more than the minimum mandatory firearms for all responsible citizens to own. Here they are, by priority of ownership:

1) Centerfire handgun--number one because you can have it on you at all times
2) Semi-auto Centerfire Rifle--the longest-ranging and highest capacity
3) .22 LR Rifle--ultra cheap and abundant ammo; superb all-around rifle
4) 12 gauge shotgun--more loads available than any other gauge; most versatile within range limitations

I can make up four of these right now, the rimfires being the limiting factor.

Far-Out! That's exactly how I itemized my 'mimimum' battery!

1.) Glock-22 Sidearm, Glock-23 CCW
2.) BLR 30-06 with Scope
3.) Mossy 835 'Slugster'
4.) Marlin Model 60

After that my collecting is primarily curio/vanity/hobby choices.

I've decided to buy that SKS (Norinco) for a "truck-gun" (which, to me, is a simple 'beater' rifle for varmints/miscreants and old tin cans), and I'm still debating the Springfield 'G.I.' 1911 - just because I've always wanted one.

"It is obvious to anyone with the simplest powers of observation that our society is in a decline. I'm in law school and it is quite obvious that the system is not built to serve and defend the average law abiding citizen. The system is built to protect illegal immigrants, criminals, corrupt amoral corporations and institutions, and jackbooted Jacobins."

People have been saying "Society is in decline" since the Greeks - maybe even the Sumerians. The phrase is always used by politicians and religions to scare people into supporting whatever power grabs they're cooking up. Worse, the phrase reminds me of those white supremacist cretins who populate so many gun forums! (I'm not saying that's YOU so don't go ballistic.)

Trust me, one hundred years from now someone will be on Glock Talk, bragging about their single stack quantum blaster Glock 34689 - and saying society is in decline!

But using the phrase as an excuse to buy guns? No problem. :)

There is no such thing as "too many shotguns." I like the fact that you have one of every type (except a Saiga conversion, which is a major oversight). (Edited to add: I can't believe you don't own an auto! Go get a Browning A5 or an 1100 or something!)

Did you cut down that sxs on your own? I cut down a Mossy 5500 (which is a hoot) and a cheap Brazilian O/U with a buddy of mine a while back. PG shotguns are of limited use, but they sure are fun range toys.

No, I bought it at a garage sale just because it was $50. I later found it it was a pretty nice Ithaca 200E, and he'd butchered a fairly valuable gun. Not sure what posessed the idiot to do that to a fine SXS like that. After monkeying with it some I realized he had cracked the stock so I've never fired it, don't need a 3" peice of walnut in my hand. Receiver is nicely engraved and all too. Oh, and I have checked; it is the right length, 18.5" barrel and 26.25" overall.

That folding/packable .410 is kind of interesting too, never seen one like it.

I guess it would all depend on the degree of shtf. You guys also assume when the shtf all the zombies will come after you. You don't take into account using it to get food or if enough time goes buy the ability to get ammo. I know I can scrounge or make just about everything I need to shoot my flintlock rifle. As far as temporary shtf I would have to go with my glock and my shotgun.

After reading the posts, I'm happy with my Mossberg 500 with pistol grip, a Kahr 9MM, Charles Daly 9mm, Several .22 pistols, and a .22 rifle. What the F is all those mags for man, WW 6. You got more ammo than Rambo bro. You need to UPS some over here to me, RIGHT NOW.

Where did you get those super hicap by the way?

And someone needs to tell that lady that she will need surgeries on her wrists, nose, face, and neck if she plans to shoot that 12 gauge like that. If it's airsoft, then she would be OK.

lol, airsoft? must be a firearms expert huh?
My wife is 4'-9" tall...she can't even reach the trigger with the stock collapsed all the way. That's the only way she could hold it. I stopped her from washing dishes to pose in my kitchen...I hope she wouldn't be shooting in there anyway. Thanks for the advice though...you just saved her alot of pain and doctors visits...I guess.

Actually, they're for the $500 GLOCK 17 as well as the $300 carbine:tongueout::tongueout:

And they didn't cost anywhere near $600 either! You just have to know where to shop.

(btw....I have just as many mags for the other Sub2K in .40S&W!!! It shares them with the GLOCK 22 and my new CCW gun:)

Exactly,
My future SHTF aresnal will look something like this:

PROVIDED I STAY IN CALI (Not likely)
1) Glock 20/29 with about 1,000 rds
2) Mini 14 6.8mm Rem Spc and about 2,000 or so rounds
3) My Savage Mark II with 5,000 rounds
4) Mossberg 12 gauge Semi-Auto Shotgun with about 2,000 rounds of 00 Buck and slugs.

If I GTFO of cali (very likely)
1) Glock 20/29 and some super high cap mags.
2) AK 47 variant with super large mags.
3) Ruger 10/22 with some 50+ round mags
4) Mossberg Semi-Auto

If I become a cop, a .50BMG is probably in my future.

Yea, I remember when was in Rome a while back. I was looking for a new sword and this guy at the sword shop kept telling me that the Empire was in decline.

I think this fella missed something somewhere along the way...If memory serves, the Roman Empire isn't quite what it used to be. I suppose this bit of news could even disprove runcible68's theory of endless utopian society, resisting the power grab of the religious-racist elite. Or wait, speaking of the fall of the Western Roman Empire, didn't it have something to do with a group of economically repressed, ethnically marginalized, religiously bigoted Germanic tribes?

Sorry, I just couldn't resist.:embarassed:

The entire length of the long barrel measures 29 inches from front to back but the last 2 inches go into the shotgun so I figure about 26-27 inches.
