I'm hoping to compete in IDPA with my Glock 19 next year. What is a good holster to use. I'm not a millionaire and don't intend to be world champion. I just want to compete, improve, and above all have some fun. What reasonably priced holsters would fit the bill?

What kind of holster do you want? IWB, OWB, Paddle...?
I don't compete, but for carry I like a paddle holster. And this one is my favorite:

This may not work for competition, but it's great for concealed carry.

Try Kytac (http://www.kytac.com/), The guy that makes it has competted for many years and decided to start making his own. I actualy met him at a IPSC match last sunday. And he gave me his card and im having him make me 3 mag holders, a flashlight holder for my surefire and a sooper holster (http://www.kytac.com/page2.html) for my G19 that i use for IPSC, i havent gotten into IDPA yet but this holster is leagal for both. You will also need good mag holders if you plan to compete and these mag holders (http://www.kytac.com/page5.html) he makes are perfect, they all have tension screws so you can determine how much or how little hold you want.
He can make them any color you want, he had a red one on, and i noticed that at least half of the people there had his holsters and mag holders. And they all liked them very much.
I hope this helped out.

I've actually been considerig a Blackhawk Serpa holster myself due to the retention mechanism, rugged materials and low price point.

Well i have the serpa blackhawk holster and i can draw from it pretty quick but it still slows me down. Thats what i am curently using, I ordered the mag holders, flashlight holder and holster that night. the problem with the blackhawk is you have to make sure that you hit that button to release it or you loose time when to just grab up on ur gun and its still attached to your hip. Now the Kytac holsters you set how much you want it to hold on to your gun and then a swift pull up will have it on target in no time.
But thats JMHO
ETA: And he also has package deals (http://www.kytac.com/page6.html) that get you everything you need at a lower price.

I've noticed a lot more holster models for the G19 than for the G32. Wouldn't any holster made for the G19 also fit the G32?

I also have a Blackhawk Serpa for my G23 which also fits and works with my G26 and G27. The one problem you mentioned that is true is that of the release button. There is the distinct possibility that you could miss this button or not hit it in a timely manner, when faced with an extreme situation. This could cost you your life. So I am also in the market for a different holster for this pieces that will work well for open and concealed carry as I do both.

I use the Blackhawk Serpa paddle holster for my G19 (with an Uncle Mikes double magazine holster) and I like them both. I'm classified sharpshooter and I'm still a newbie, but I don't think the retention slows me down at all. I've never drawn the holster with the pistol or had the retention slow me down in any way. In fact, I think my technique of pushing the pistol slightly down into the holster as I release the retention lever helps me attain a solid, consistent grip as I draw.
Improvements in my scores will come from better, faster shooting; my draw is fast enough.
Bottom line is get a holster and start entering IDPA matches.
It's hard to beat the offerings at www.blade-tech when it comes to IDPA holsters.
Since the G19/G23/G32 are identical in size, a G32 will fit a G19 holster.
I've tried them all, and I personally like Comp Tac kydex for the best overall quality and value.
My ulitmate preference is Milt Sparks, but that is real leather that costs $$$ and takes 16-18 weeks for delivery.

I took a look at Kytac because of their reputation for competition but I didnt see much difference in that and Blade-Tech from simply looking at the web site. And you have to call in the order, then wait as compared to ording online and having shipped the same day.
Can you tell us a little about the competition advantages, speed etc??

The only experiance I have with the copany is what I learned from everyone at the match using his gear, as well as him using his own gear. If you call him yes it take a little more time becuase he hand makes everything but he told me that he could have everything to me in a few weeks and takes visa/paypal/cash.
He doesnt mass produce everything, he just makes it by hand and he is his own QC and if he doesnt like it he doesnt send it out. I do know what he told me. He tries to keep glock products in stock becuase they seem to be the most popular.
He also offers a 100% satafaction gaurtine. But Im not sure about anything other than that.
I used some of the gear that people had there and i defently liked it. I saved time using it vs my serpa blackhawk, and cheap duel mag pouch. I shaved at least a second or two from my time when i used his mag holders and sooper holster. Maybe it was just luck or what but I placed 23rd and 25th first and 2and second stages, it was my first matcha nd had little to no idea what i was doing, and then one of the guys there let me use his holster and mag pouches for kytac, in the 3rd and 4th stages, I placed 14th in the 3rd and 12th in the 4th. The different gear defently saved me time becuase i wasnt fighting the mag pouches or having to take that time to push down to make sure that i hit the release button. I just grabbed and pulled.
So thats all the experiance i have with this.
ETA: I am in no way connected to this copany, I just like to get the word out when i find a good copany with a good product.

Yes...all the same. G19, G23, and G32. They probably just list it as a 19 because that's the most popular.

Yes I have the MTAC from comp-tac for my CCW as stated in my sig line. But the OP is asking about speed holsters for IDPA/IPSC type matches.
And a holster for IDPA/IPSC type matches you need something strong but no active straps or catches that you have to defeat before you can draw your weapon. Only passive retenchion.

The main thing i know about blade tech is that everyone i have known that uses one of these for matches or other carry, have had problems and blade tech didnt take responsiblity for their product. Where as I do have a bit of extra help knowing that the guy that makes the Kytac products will be at the IPSC matches that I go to and has told me that anytime i have any problems that he will fix it asap.
Yes blade tech is cheaper but you get what you pay for and I would rather pay a little more for somthing that i know will last vs buying somethign cheap and then in a year or less have to replace it.
But this is JMHO. Everyone will make their own desicions on what they like, the only reason I have yet to order a sooper holster from kytac is that I havent decided on weather im going to buy a full size to compete with or not. But the mag and flash light holders will work for my CCW purposes and IPSC matches and my black hawk hoslter is great for open carry and range carry. But i do know that I want one of the sooper holsters from Kytac as soon as i decide on the full size gun i want for comp.

I am interested to understand more about this. Can you elaborate a a little on the types of problems? Ive been running a cheapo Fobus paddle that I cant seem to break but have been considering perhaps a style that will help me improve my draw stroke time. Both types seems to have adjustable settings to allow for retention or speed.
Last night I was reading the latest IDPA Tactical Journal and they listed all of the gear the competitors used at the Nationals this year. Blade-Tech was by far the largest single holster source and Kytec had fewer than a handful.
Those are the countries best defensive pistol shooters.

Why is that?

They will slow you down, With only a swift pull up and the gun is on target. you dont have to take extra steps to draw the wep.

Well blade tech has been around alot longer and Kytac is a local Oklahoma company. He doesnt spend alot of money advertising so it doesnt surprise me.
But like ive said before i dont stand to gain anything from sales of his gear. I just like to get the word out on good products and good companys.

This is true, to a degree.
The guy you're preaching this to beat all but 2 SSP/MA shooters in the Mississippi IDPA Championship, and he did it shooting a completely stock G19, with a Bianchi thumb-break holster. They used an STI and a 34 in gaming kydex gear.
I use a Comp-Tac locking paddle that barely has any retention, and we're pretty much tied when it comes to a Bill drill.
But then, I change holsters every 3 weeks (or I did until I found the Locking Paddle)... and Tad has been using that freakin' holster since he was a fetus. ;)
Oh yeah,
Did I mention I REALLY like the Comp-Tac Locking Paddle? This is about my 25th holster, and hands down the best one I've ever used in IDPA.
My other choices, personally, would be Ready Tactical, and then Ky-Tac, and then Blade-Tech.

Not a loaded question, but I want to ask again, what types of problems can someone expect to see with Blade-Tech?
I have some blade tech and never had a problem other than the wait. Dollar for dollar, comp tac works better for me.
