View Full Version : I put an Enfield in layaway today
So I got a call from the gunshop I help out at that they were busy today and needed help. I went in and as usual in between helping customers, I am looking over their current stock. I notice an old Enfield in the corner. I ask about it and it turns out to be a US made (Savage) Enfield SMLE that is marked "US Property" on the receiver. It is in really nice shape. I was told that it was probably made before US involvement in WWII as we were making Enfields for the Brits and shipping them over helping their war time production and that this is where this one had come from. I was also told that it was owned by a gunsmith that had taken it apart, cleaned every part, oiled it and put it back together. It looks like it as it is really clean, but still orginal (no rebluing or crap like that). It also has the spike bayonet and metal sheath with it. They sold it to me for $240. I put $100 down on it.
How did I do? Was any or all of the story I heard BS? I mainly wanted it because the price was right for me and I also have a Webley Mk VI (proof marked 1917) that this would go great with. The Webley has been converted to .45acp, but the Enfield is still .303 Brit. That Webley has made me open my eyes to old British guns. It looks like it has been through 2 world wars, but damn if it doesn't shoot like it was made yesterday. Between the two I would still have less than $400 wrapped up in them.

If the bolt serial number matches the receiver, the wood isn't cracked or otherwise seriously damaged, and the bore is good (not rusty, not shot out), then it seems that you did well. Savage Enfields can go for $200-400, depending on correctness and condition.

I didn't check the numbers. But everything else is in great condition (obviously taking into account its age).
I am just glad I didn't get taken. Even if it isn't numbers matching, I will still be pleased with my purchase.
Next time you look at it, look at teh head of the bolt. There will be a number stamped on it (0-4 I think...) The lower the number the better. It indicates basically, how roomy the chamber is.
The history of the Enfields is part of the fun in collecting them. It sound like you got a good deal especially since you seem happy and excited. Hell thats what its about ,right? I have devloped a fondness for enfields and man I like to hear when some one gets one and there some tid-bit if history to go along with it. Good for you man. Have fun.
I got some money today (sold a gun), so I will be picking up tomorrow and pics will follow.

Nice!
Where can I find original parts for these guns? I at least need a sling and an original one would be nice. I found one on ebay, but better deals can usually be had from places that specialize in these kinds of things.
I would also like an orginal (or close to it) lanyard for my Webley.
Thanks.
BTW I have it now, I just haven't been home yet to takes its pics.
