Well, I had been looking for a .22 rifle for cheap plinking, and was going to get the Ruger, but Dick's has a nice price on the Remington 597, complete with scope, for 159.00.
This is the one with a green syn stock.

Then, there is a $20 dollar mail rebate off of that, and I had a $25 coupon just for the next 3 days that they sent us in the mail, so the rifle was only 115.00 or so.
They also had the ruger 10/22 without a scope at 159.00, no rebate on that one.

I was also surprised to see that their 9mm UMC ammo was 6.98 per box, which is cheaper than I had seen lately on the internet.
Anyway, wanted to pass this along to any interested souls.

I picked one of these up and am EXTREMELY happy. The 597 was way more of a gun than what I payed for it. Half-ass zero'd the scope and smoked two crows the next day at 45 yards...LOVE IT!

I was very pleased with this little rifle also.
My son was shooting silver dollar sized groups at 50 yards with it.
He is steadier than me---very nice deal all in all.
Now I need a couple extra mags---I see that CDNN sells them

I ordered three extra mags from www.midwayusa.com This was the second time that I had dealt with them...extremely friendly....shipped my product even though my debit card was declined...called me to tell me about the problem in a very nice manner and we got things worked out. Quick shipping (Especially in the Midwest since they are located in MO)and prices are good...

I paid $9 for the extra mags and everywhere else I saw were $14 +

When the 597s first came out, the magazines were about as good as a sock with holes in it. The springs were not strong enough to reliably feed more than 1-2 rounds at a time. It seems that they've improved since.

The work-around was to get a spring for a S&W 22 and cut the coils to fit.

As much as I hate to say it, I like my 597 better than the 10/22 even though the 10/22 is much better looking.

I wouldn't say that a 10/22 is better looking than the Remi. Depending on the models we are talking about. The stock Ruger with Iron sights and the barrel band are UGLY if you ask me. These new Remi's with the OD green synthetic stocks, no iron sights, and a 3x9 scope are fairly pleasing to the eye, and more pleasing to the wallet. I dont know anywhere that you can get a 10/22 for $130 with a sythetic stock (or any stock for that matter) and a scope. The baseline Rugers around here are $200 +
