What do you look for in a firing range?

Location, location, location.
Here where I live there's not a lot of choices. The one I belong to I enjoy alot. I can't really think of anything that I would want added out there. Maybe a moving target range but that isn't really important to me right now.

Targets I can see. Friendly folks who are interested in safety but don't run around the range like a bunch of jackbooted Nazis ordering people around. Employees who are helpful, but quietly exclude shooters who are acting inappropriately. Help and advice when I need it. Being left alone when I don't. Honesty.
I'm describing the range where I shoot. Marksman Indoor Range on Nebraska St. in South Houston. Yes, this is a shameless free plug.
I also frequent the Marksman range and pretty much agree with your description of their operation. My only complaint there is that for a long time they did a poor job of maintaining all the shooting lanes. However they seem to be doing a great job of that here lately.
I have been shooting there for so many years I have lost count. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I have taken several different old guns in over the years and they have always been helpful in finding the actual value of the gun in question. Countless time they have cheerfully answered questions and provided help with a problem.
I was just there yesterday and had a great time with my G-36 and my g-21.
Their prices are great too. It's a comfortable place to go and shoot and just hang out and browse the showcase.
If you go there with any frequency you have seen me there, no doubt.

I'll be weird and say emptiness, hah
I shoot at a small range off Clear Lake City blvd in Webster. THere's a lot of other really nice ranges not that far from there, PSC, Marksman, Texas City Municipal, but when I go to this one (it's small, only about 12 firing lanes and that's it) I'm usually the only person there, or at most, in the presence of maybe 2 other shooters.
I can always get the lane I like (far right, by the wall, where all my empty casings conveniently end up right behind me in the corner), don't even HAVE to worry about any inconsiderate people, because there's rarely anyone there, and can just do my own thing.
While it may be fun to meet new people, I rarely have time to go to the range with my schedule, so when I go to the range it's ME time. If I've got a spare hour or two in the afternoon before work on saturday, I don't wanna spend any of it with someone asking me what kind of gun I'm shooting or if I saw the latest news story or anything, I just wanna make some noise :)
So that's my choice :)
