I have a general ACOG question:
There are so many models with so many functions, where do you start if you want an ACOG for CQC use on a Colt M4?
Or, let me know how you decided on the ACOG that's right for your application.
Thanks,
S.R.

What kind of magnification do you think you would want? Have you tried any ACOG's?
I tried several different optics including a TA31 before I decided I wanted one.

I haven't tried an ACOG, but the reviews they get - and military endorsements - are impressive.
I'm not looking for a sniper scope - something close up to 300 m. I guess.

Go an handle them I thought I wanted nothing else but a reflex II once I got to try one out I found it was too dark for me and that I couldn't fix that. As ACOG's go you need to look through them to see the reticule and see which one you would be happy with if any. For as you said there are many options.

most of them are calibrated using 20in barrels.
Here is a f.a.q. from their website:
03. What bullet was used to calibrate the ACOG scopes?
The TA01, TA11, & TA31 (.223) were designed for the 5.56mm, 20 inch barrel, 55 grain bullet, and M16/AR15 carry handle mount. The TA01B & TA11C(.308) were designed for the 7.62mm, 20 inch barrel, 168 grain bullet, and M16/AR15 carry handle mount. The TA01NSN was designed specifically for the US Special Operations Command SOPMOD M4 Carbine. To meet their requirements, the reticle bullet drop compensator and range finding stadia lines were based on the trajectory of the 62 grain bullet from a 14.5 inch barrel, flattop mount (Picatinny rail Mil.Std.1913).

As I understand the BAC function of ACOGs, they can be used for CQB, but aren't as fast as a one power optic such as an Aimpoint or EOtech.
If you hunt and peck, you can find an ACOG that corresponds to your rifle's configuration and ammo selection with minimal point-of-impact error of the BDC reticle here: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=18&t=229420
If you have deeper pockets, the S&B short dot is the king of CQB 1-4x variable optics. The Meopta K-dot offers similar performance without breaking the bank. http://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=2445

Ive got a Ta11F on a 20" RRA predator. My selection was based on picking a reticle I liked, selecting the appropriate model for a flattop and going from there. I can shoot ammo from 55 gr American Eagle all the way up to 75 gr Hornady OTM and the difference in point of impact out to 300 yds is barely the width of the reticle if that.
Id be willing to bet that out to 300 yds it wouldnt matter that the ACOG might be calibrated for a longer barrel. The velocity differences likely arent big enough to change the bullet drop enough to matter inside of 300 yds.
Also, read the FAQ on Trijicons site. There is lots of good info in there.

My TA01 full line recticle RED is calibrated as BigDollars described above but it doesn't matter that much (as dfowler21 just said). I have it mounted on a 16" barrel flat top and the 300 m recticle is dead on at 300 yards and the 600m mark worked great for me at 600yds this Summer. Ammo was Lake City M193 and Winchester Q3131A (that's 55 grain).
Best advice for deciding is to spend a LOT of time on the optics board at AR15.com. Tons of reviews, discussions and recommendations there.
They are awesome scopes. I've used this combo on a few deer very successfully. It's a little tricky under 20 yards in heavy cover but it'll work - for deer. Wouldn't be my first choice if those close range deer were packing heat and had opposible thumbs though.
Good luck.
