View Full Version : Need help! My AK is denting my brass.
I have a Arsenal SA M-5. This is essentially a Milled receiver AK chambered for 223.
When it ejects the brass the brass is hitting the bolt dust cover near the back and either denting the neck or denting the case about 1/2 way down.
Any suggestions?
I can not shoot a weapon that kills it brass. I need help.
In the following picture you can see where the brass is hitting the dust cover. Look for the yellowed area right above the end of the safety lever.

get some small rubber tubing and split it and put it on the edge of the receiver cover where the brass is hitting.
Shoot wolf steel cased ammo

I have that same sight on an S-12. I'd try the tubing idea

Yeah, we have no idea how our spent shells (non-brass) look!

My free 2cents/thinking "Ak" not "AR"
FWIK, the above is probably the most common solution when attemping to lessen the denting of the brass. When I got my first AK, the dented brass was also my biggest concern. I had plans of using brass reloaded ammo. Never did! One can buy the steel cased AK ammo so cheap and the Ak shoots the stuff without one single problem. AK guns are designed to fire and then vigorously eject steel cased ammo. I am not sure you can find the same "bullets" to reload similar to the COM ammo. Camp Perry accuracy shooting is probably not the Ak's strong point, but the wolf 7.62 ammo you buy now, hollowpoint or fmj, is pretty good stuff for destroying things. The wolf bullets have a fairly large air pocket in the nose that cause the bullet to upset upon impaction, the base to turn and go sideways/tumble. The hollowpoints do not expand like a traditional hollowpoint. I don't know about the wolf .223 ammo but I think the AK designers thinking was to allow U.S. shooter the ability to use familiar ammo.
I pulled a few bullets. The purpose of this picture is to show the 7.62(.311) bullet is fairly good size and with the air pocket in the nose it weighs 123gr....and tumbles. I realize there are those that know much more about the Ak than I, but for the bucks spent vs reloading/saving brass/etc, I think Wolf MC (military classic) is good stuff at bargin prices!!

Very common with the AK design to bang up the casings when ejecting them.

Usually the AK dents the casings on the bolt handle. Try slipping a piece of thick rubber hose on the bolt handle and see if it keeps the brass from hitting the receiver cover.

The Firearms For Sale forum is a few places down -- you might as well list it, because you'll never be happy if you can't live with dented brass.
It's an AK thing.
