I'm fairly new to Texas ....got a bill in the mail today to renew the registration on a car I no longer own. When I traded this car in at the dealership, I got brand new plates. I assumed they cancelled the old ones, but apparently not.
Do I just write on the bill that I no longer own the vehicle and send it back? Hopefully I don't have to show up in person to clear this up.

I'm pretty sure it says to destroy the bill if you sold the vehicle.

Yes, the instructions are on the paper you received. If you follow them, all will be well. Registration information on trade-ins can lag the actual transfer by several months.

Not to mention, you can get automatic tickets after you have sold the car. I got those from Plano last year after I traded in my car. About a month later I suddenly got 4 red light tickets, so I had to prove I no longer owned the car. I hate automatic revenue generators.

How do you think we can afford to be 'America's Friendliest City' unless we get money from our neighbors?

Same here, I had parking tickets sent to me about 9 months after I sold the car.

You know, I've said that if I ever sell a motor vehicle privately again, I'm going to have all the paperwork filled out and meet the buyer at the courthouse annex. It can save a lot of grief.
