For those who have done the in-person Garand purchase, does CMP charge sales tax for an in-store purchase? I know they don't for out-of-state mail orders, but what about at the store itself?
I ask because I'm going to be heading by that way in a week or so and may do the in-person buy instead of waiting for my order to show up. Anyone with experience help out here?

Bassman,
I don't know the answer to your question about tax. But if you are waiting on a Springfield Armory service grade Garand, they have said the wait is going to be about 100 days longer than what the website shows. I called earlier today, and switched my order to a H&R service grade, and they already charged my credit card. They usually don't charge your card until they are ready to ship. I expect to see my rifle on Tuesday, unless they shipped it today, and it gets here tomorrow. I'm not sure if they ever do that. I know FedEx delivers on Saturday, but I don't know if that is only ground, or if that includes Overnight.

Wow. 100 days? They told me a few weeks ago it would be 60-90 from date of order, as advertised. Does this mean they don't have any Springfields in stock?

I know what they were saying a few weeks ago. That was when we were discussing our oders last time. But if you check out the forum on the CMP website, there were plenty of people that were told add 100 days to what the website says. I wonder why they don't just update the website then.
I'm sure they have the SAs in stock, or they wouldn't put them on the website. But you have to think about how they do their rifle orders. They don't just have rifles come in from the manufacturer. They receive a batch of rifles, and then they tear them down, inspect them, put them back togethor, grade them, and then fill the orders. I think what happened was, they spent most of their time getting the M1 Carbines to sell, and probably got swamped with those orders, so they had to let something fall behind. That happened to be the SAs. I would call them and switch, unless you really want the SA. They shut the place down after the 16th for the Holidays. They don't open back up until next year. Personally, I didn't mind switching to the H&R, because the Special I ordered was a Springfield Armory. It just expands my collection is all.

So, as far as quality goes, there's nothing wrong with getting an H&R over a Springfield? I'm not really tied down to getting a Springfield, I just am sick of waiting. If you'd recommend an H&R, I'm calling them tomorrow to change my order. From what you said, you should be getting your H&R by next weekend most likely. From my experience, they don't charge the card until 3 or 4 days before shipping.

I'm not an expert on these things. But from what I have been reading, the SAs people have been getting this time around have been kind of shoddy. That is one of the reasons I was more willing to switch. But I don't think you can call tomorrow. They no longer work on Saturday, if I am not mistaken.
On my last order, they charged my card on the day before they shipped. That tells me, they are going to ship my rifle on Monday for a Tuesday delivery. But then again, if they only work from Wednesday to Friday, it may be a Wed for Thur type deal. Unless they shipped it today and I get it tomorrow.

I just got a pair of Inland Carbines this past week. They shipped Tuesday afternoon, got 'em Wednesday morning. I'll call Monday morning and change the Garand order to H&Rs. Sure, they won't be WWII-era M1s, but they'll still be Garands.

Well if the WWII thing is what was important to you, the SAs weren't WWIIs either. They were post war.
How long did it take for the carbine orders to go through? I still need to order some. I hate they way they have the ordering system staggered for the Carbines right now.

Then I've got no problem with switching orders. If I have a choice between waiting until May for a post-war rifle vs. getting one in a week, that makes it real easy.
My carbine order went through in about a week after it was input. Order date according to the e-store was 11/29, got the carbines on 12/5. They're out of mags, btw, so you're gonna have to go looking.
I got two pretty nice looking Inlands here now. Had to break out the Orange-Glo and the Old English to clean off the dried cosmo on the stocks, but they both look great now. First range trip is on Sunday.

Hey, G&D, any updates? I called yesterday morning and changed the order, but nothing has happened yet. They said they'd charge my card, but no activity on that front, and the e-store hasn't changed, either. Still shows the order for SA Service Grades. Any progress on your end?
I checked the CMP forum, and it looks like there are no service grades left at either store, period. And people who ordered after I did are already getting theirs processed...
I've considered dropping by the store and buying in person, but if there are no SGs left, there's no point.

Mine is still showing processing as of today and yesterday, but they did charge my card and update the website the same day I switched, although it was late in the evening when it showed up
I don't know what to tell you, about people saying they are getting theirs' that ordered after you. Perhaps they are mistaking their first processing with getting the rifle. If I am not mistaken, it shows processing when you order, then it goes open, then it goes processing again for shipping, does it not? I don't remember.
All I know is, I was told I would get the H&R service, H&R correct, or SA correct several weeks before I got the SA service, on the day I switched. Last Friday. My SA service went open on 10/26. Didn't you order yours after I did? And the latest I had seen anybody say they were getting theirs' were from going open in early September.

Mine went open on 11/1. The people I was talking about ordered H&R SGs in late November and got them processed and charged already. I saw a couple SA SGs that went open in mid-October, about a week or two before ours did, and they just got theirs over the weekend. Looks like we just missed the boat before the backorders came down...:steamed:
Also, there's a post on the forum now that says the total backorder list for SGs as of close of business Monday was 2000 between both stores and both brands. Scary. But what worries me is the total lack of activity on both my e-store account and my CC. Hasn't even updated to show that they are H&Rs instead of Springers. :headscratch:
I was amazed at how fast my Inlands got here...which is why I'm a little bit peeved that the Garands are taking so long...Inlands went open on 11/29, showed up on my doorstep on 12/5...

Something seems kind of fishy. It is almost as if the CMP people are "controlling" the rumors, so they can sell all of the rifles, instead of everybody piling up on the SAs.
At first, people were complaining about quality of the SAs they were getting. Then they claimed there weren't any WWII serial numbers in the batch, and then they were claiming they were extremely back ordered. All of it seems to be turning out to be not true.

I just hope it means I get mine this year...I'll call it a Christmas miracle if I do...

I am so bummed right now. Called this morning to find out what the story was, had to leave a message. No reply yet. Still no activity. Calling again tomorrow morning.
My understanding is, if you go to one of the CMP stores (and are from out of state) and buy a rifle, you have the choice of paying sales tax and taking it with you, or paying shipping and having them ship it back to your home address. The tax rate at the south store is high enough that it's cheaper to have them ship your purchase.

Got 'em last Wednesday. They look beautiful. A little finish wear on the metal, but nothing to worry about. One has a brand-new CMP stock. First range trip later this week...:woohoo:
