Graf, huh? It blew my mind when I heard we gave it back to the Germans; that and Nuernberg, Bad Kreuznach, Baumholder, and even Hohenfels, IIRC.

Bad Kreuznach too? I was stationed there from 1979-1981. I wasn't surprised that they turned over Amberg(near Nurnberg). Didn't need the Cav there any more since we quit guarding the border.

From what I read, they shut it down around 2000 or so. When I was there in 94-97, there was talk of shutting the place down. They went so far as to refurbish some of the gov't leased housing to prepare to return it to the Germans, and then the whole idea got scrapped. I was lucky enough to get one of the freshly refurbished units, and I had as good housing as some the Sgt Majors had...beautiful cherry wood interior doors, actual ceramic tile kitchen floor, ceramic tiles in the bathroom, freestanding sink big enough to swim in, it was great!

1st AD HQ I hear was moved, and when it went, BK followed.

Yeah its almost all gone now! Baumholder still has troops, just the range system was turned over. 7th ATC is still at Graf, but everything else is over at Vilseck now. Nothing left in Frankfort, Darmstadt is still open, as are most of the airbases, even if they don't have any planes on them. Meisau/Wheilerbach and Vogelway are still up and running. Hohenfelds is the NTC of europe still run by 7thATC. Of course now that the wall is down the Germans hate us even more than before. Sometimes wish it had never happened. At least then we knew who our enemy was.

If we still have Hohenfels, it was Wildflecken then that we gave back.

How ardent is the German disdain for us? I didn't notice anything last time I was there in 2006, but then, I wasn't near any bases. (I was visiting my in-laws)

When I was in Germany(79-81 & 84-88) many of the older Germans liked the Americans OK(at least the ones near the Czech border), but the younger ones couldn't wait to get the US out of Germany. I wish I could have been there when the US military shut down some of those military bases, so the people who wanted the US out of Germany got their wish. Be careful what you wish for. You might get it.:tongueout:

In fact, on my last visit to Germany, I recall being near the Leinezentrum shopping mall in Laatzen when I was approached by a man who recognized me as American and guessed that I was either military or exmilitary based on my haircut. He thanked me for my service and told me a tale about his time in service. Apparantly he was a groundcrewman working with the US military during the Berlin airlift. He spoke of the long hours with aircraft flying in and out continuously, about the urgency to get them refueled and reloaded as quickly as possible so we could save the rest of Berlin from the Soviets. I saw no protesters anywhere in the Hannover area.

Yep, I worked with the 107mm mortar most of the time I was in the Army(when I was working as an 11C).

My first trip to Germany, I was stationed way over on the western side of the country. The second time, I was stationed way over on the eastern side. I met a lot of older Germans who remembered the end of WWII. Many of them were anxiously watching to see which way the tanks would come from and which color stars they'd have on them. The Americans had white stars and the Russians had red stars. Most of them were pretty happy when the tanks came from the west.:faint:
